True Colors Tour
True Colors was originally written by Billy Steinberg about his own mother. Tom Kelly altered few verses and the duo submitted the song to Cyndi Lauper. The song was both the title track and the first single released from Cyndi Lauper's second album. Other songs they wrote for Cyndi Lauper include ?I Drove All Night' and ?Unconditional Love'.

The Unconditional Love went on to be covered by Susanna Hoffs. True Colors reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #3 in Australia, and #5 on the UK Singles Chart. The first annual True Colors Tour 2007 was a music tour created by Cyndi Lauper. The tour stopped at fifteen cities between June 8 and June 30, 2007. The Human Rights Campaign received $1 from each ticket sold throughout the tour.

Cyndi Lauper embarked on a 2007 annual True Colors Tour with several other striking performances by Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Erasure, and The Dresden Dolls, with Margaret Cho as MC. Other artists who appeared for specific tour locations included The Gossip, Rosie O'Donnell, The Cliks, Indigo Girls, Cazwell, Amanda Lepore and Rufus Wainwright. The tour was for the Human Rights Campaign to promote gay rights. The program benefited HRC and other organizations that provide support to the GLBT community and to the straight friends and family who love them.

True Colors Tour was sponsored by Logo TV that aired a half-hour special on June 21, 2007 titled Shining Through: Behind the Scenes of True Colors. Comedian Margaret Cho hosted the special at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the half an hour long special, Cyndi Lauper explained the purpose of the True Colors Tour: Cynthia Ann Stephanie. Born in 1953, Cyndi Lauper is an American Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and MTV VMA-winning video and Emmy Award-winning film, television and Theater actress.

Cyndi Lauper is so unusual and became the first artist in history to have four top-five singles released from one album. So far she has released 11 albums, over 40 singles, and has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. She continues to tour the world in support of human rights campaigns.

The 1969 federal hate-crime law extends only to crimes provoked by actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin, and only while the victim is found involved in a federally-protected activity, like voting or going to school. Penalty, under both the existing law and the LLEHCPA, for hate crimes includes prison terms of up to 10 years. While, crimes relating kidnapping, sexual assault, or murder can bring life terms. As of FBI statistics, of the over 113,000 hate crimes since 1991, 14% were motivated by sexual orientation bias. Also notable is the fact that a November 2001 poll indicated that 73% of Americans favor hate-crime legislation covering sexual orientation.

The Bill is supported by thirty-one state Attorneys General and over 210 national law enforcement, professional, education, civil rights, religious, and civic organizations, including the AFL-CIO, the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the NAACP.

True Colors has been used in many advertisements, including Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, Kodak, used in ?Show Your True Colors' campaign and others. The song was also used as the preshow film for ?Honey, I Shrunk the Audience'. The Matthew Shepard Act which is officially the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 or LLEHCPA), HR 1592 is a proposed federal bill that would expand the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes provoked by a victim.

The bill would remove the current condition that the victim be taking part in a federally-protected activity, like voting or going to school and give federal authorities greater ability to indulge in hate crimes investigations that local authorities choose not to pursue. The ACT passed the House of Representatives on May 3, 2007, 237 to 180. This act is named for an American student, Matthew Shepard, who was tortured and murdered in a 1998 hate crime.
