Tony Tone band has become a sensational R&B and Soul group in the last few years. Reunited after a gap of almost six years this group has remained one of the soul and neo soul band of the decade. Currently performing as a trio Tony Tone has released four studio albums and a number of chart topping hits. Tony Tone bands complete name is Tony! Toni! Tone!. This band was formed as a trio in 1988 in Oakland, California by two brothers namely lead singer and bassist Charles Wiggins, singer and guitarist Dwayne Wiggins and their cousin drummer and keyboardist Timothy Christian Riley. Over the years the band has gone under several lineup changes but Dwayne and Riley have been performing as permanent members and third member is Amar Khalil. Other musicians who have been a part of Tony Tone in the past include Elijah Baker, Carl Wheeler, Antron Haile and Randall Wiggins. Since debut the group has a record deal with Mercury Records.
In the debut year the trio was able to sign a recording contract with Wing/Mercury Records and the first album Who? was released. This was written and produced by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy. It included nine tracks with songs like “For the Love of You”, “Born Not to Know” and “Not Gonna Cry For You”. The album was semi-hit and managed to sell around 700,000 copies earning a gold certification. This was followed by The Revival in 1990 which proved to be a big hit by going platinum with over a million sold. The album received three stars out of five from Rolling Stone magazine. In 1993 came Sons of Soul which proved to be the best effort by Tony Tone as it charted at #3 on US R&B and #24 on US Billboard. It went on to sell over two million copies earning a 2x platinum status. This album was declared one of the best albums of 1993 by Time magazine. Five singles from this album went on to hit various charts not only in the US but also abroad in countries like Canada, Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand.
House of Music was released in 1996. It sold well with a million copies and was certified platinum. House of Music managed to chart at #10 on US R&B and #32 on US Billboard. According to critics this was the best ever work by Tony Tone. After this, till date the band has not released any studio album. Right after this album the group disbanded in 1997 as Charles left the group to pursue a solo career. Tony Tone was practically inactive for a few years. In 2003 eventually in 2003 Amar joined Dwayne and Riley to reform Tony Tone. Some of the chart topping singles by the group include “Little Walter”, “The Blues”, “Feels Good”, “It Never Rains”, “Whatever You Want” and “Diary”. This trio has collaborated with artists like Alicia Keys, DJ. Quik and Vanessa Williams.
Tony Tone has started writing material for a new album and soon the trio will be hitting the studio for recordings.
