Born in the mid 1940s in a family that encouraged creativity, his father was a jazz drummer who performed with renowned bandleaders at the time of his career. One of Tom's grandfathers was a painter, and the other was a philosopher. He earned his bachelors degree in History from a college in upstate New York.
At the age of 12, Tom along with his two brothers formed their own folk band. The band performed at a nightclub for numerous years before releasing their first album in the 1960s and it was in the 60s again where he received his first break through as a singer.
