One of the hottest young Latin bands of the present time, Tiempo Libre is best known for the music that features rich tradition of the Bands native Cuba.
Tiempo Libre are two-time Grammy-nominated group that quickly became a center of attention of the people living in America and its surroundings for their provocative, enjoyable shows of timba; heart-pounding rhythms; and an appealing, driving groove blend of Latin jazz.
Although Miami-based Tiempo Libre's members are classically trained yet the band is equally comfortable playing in jazz clubs, concert venues, and dance halls. Since its formation in 2001, Tiempo Libre has produced a kind of music that reinterprets and reinvigorates traditional Cuban music with a youthful and contemporary sound.
They later experimented with a new style of music fusing Cuban trends and American favorites. During a summer season of the following year, Tiempo Libre astonished a crowd of over 12,000 music enthusiasts at Ravinia Festival with their genuine music.
Tiempo Libres critical acclaim increased when they performed with Aretha Franklin during summer in 2003 and dazzled a crowd of 20,000 music addicts. In Hua Hin, Thailand, the band was an undeniable sensation at the Heineken Jazz Festival.
Tiempo Libre went on to make appearances at sold-out houses in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Theater and the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas featured the band before millions of fans. The 2005 Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia too featured the group to give keen pleasure to the music-lovers in the region.
The year 2005 saw Tiempo Libre making their European debut where they brought sold-out houses in Italy, Greece and Turkey. The group released their debut album Arroz con Mango on the Shanachie label to universally glowing reviews.
Centered on the members deep Cuban roots and their experience in United States, Arroz con Mango garnered tremendous attention of both critics and fans and a Grammy Award nomination for the Best Salsa/Meringue Album in 2006.
A year later, Tiempo Libre came up with their another album titled What You've Been Waiting For/ Lo Que Esperabas which, once again, earned the band their second Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Tropical album.
In 2007, Tiempo Libre began another exciting project, Rumba Sinf?nica, adding to symphony orchestra and Cuban band eventually. To-date, the band has performed Rumba Sinf?nica in Ottawa, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, the Portland Symphony, and Philadelphia just to name a few.
Besides recording and performing music, the members of Tiempo Libre are contributing remarkably to spreading Cubans rich musical arts and traditions through conducting an various educational activities.
Today, Tiempo Libre are a regular feature at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, Miami's JVC Jazz Festival, SOB's in NYC, Lincoln Centre, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Festival International de Louisiane, Houstons Society of the Performing Arts, Orange County PAC, Kimmel Center, California Centre for the Performing Arts, California World Fest, Lotus Music Festival, New-Haven Jazz Festival, the Colorado, Green and other Eastern music festivals.
