These United States is a American rock and roll band from Washington DC. It is a band that mixes in a variety of musical styles such as country, folk, pop and rock to create a sound that truly portrays what American culture is all about. It has been active in the world of music since 2006 and has made a name for itself as a band to watch live, via These United States tickets. It features bandleader and songwriter Jesse Elliott, keyboardist and guitarist Justin Craig, electric guitarist J. Tom Hnatow and percussionist Aaron Latos. Ever since its debut, it has released five amazing albums.
The first album released by These United States was titled as A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden and was produced by David Strackany, known best as Paleo. It featured a number of artists such as Saadat Awan, Dave Hahn, Dan D'Avella and Mark Charles of Vandaveer. A remastered and remixed version of the album was released by T J Lipple of Aloha and Chad Clark of Beauty Pill at the Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia. This remix album came out in 2008. The same year, a song from the album debuted in the UK on the BBC Radio 6 channel. It received favorable reviews from all over the UK and the US, from the press by The Village Voice, Alternative Press and The Austin Chronicle.
Right after the release of their first album, These United States began work on their second album, this time at the Shangri-La Studios located in Lexington, Kentucky. It was mixed and produced by Dave Lundy and Rob Gordon with the members of the band. It was released in 2008 and it was praised heavily by the likes of the National Public Radio, NPR, Paste Magazine and Pitchfork Media, all famous media in the US. Even more exposure was achieved when they were interviewed by the likes of Daytrotter, All Things Considered and WOXY, recording live sessions as well. It also ranked well at the top of the College Music Journal Top 200 radio chart.
In 2009, These United States third album, Everything Touches Everything was released and it received rave reviews from the media. It marked yet another phase of experimentation by the band with the SPIN Magazine praising it as 'overwhelming' and 'cosmic'. It was also reviewed by The New York Times, where it was praised as being 'superb' and 'aphoristic'. Songs from the album received a lot of radio airplay in the US on channels such as WXPN where famous music writer and DJ Bruce Warren praised them as being one of America's best kept secrets in rock music.
These United States began work on their fourth album in rural Pennsylvania with producers Dan Wise and Justin Craig. It featured vocalists such as Dawin Landes and was released to the public in 2010. The album was titled as What Lasts and was followed by a highly successful live tour with bands such as Bonnie Prince Billy and Fruit Bats. It was also praised by The New York Times.
