Originated from Wandworth, London, The XX were formed in the year 2005 and went on to take the world by storm due to their outstanding music and exciting live performances. Their music revolves around the genres of dream pop and indie pop. The band is made up of Jamie Smith, Oliver Sim, and Romy Madley Croft. Initially, the band also included Baria Qureshi as a part of their lineup, but she left the group in the year 2009. All members of the band were born in the 90s, thus making it a group of young and fresh musicians. They all attended school together as well.
When the members were around fifteen years old, they began to practice their music together in the Elliot School. This school was known for producing musicians as some of the popular singers from the music industry belonged to this school including the bands Four Tet, Burial and Hot Chip. Oliver Sim was the bass guitarist of the band, whereas Romy Croft was their lead guitarist. Two members joined the band shortly afterward namely, Jamie Smith on the drum machine and Baria Qureshi on the guitars and keyboards.
After three years, The XX managed to get a recording contract with a label known as New Musical Express. Their first song which was released in the year 2009 and was titled Crystalised. It went on to become an internet phenomenon and attracted a lot of attention on the social media. The same year, the band recorded their debut album. This was a self titled and self produced record.
The album went on to become a raging success. It went on to be placed on the “Best of the Year” charts. In addition to that, it was placed on the number ninth spot on the Rolling Stones chart. In NME, it was placed on the second spot. Moreover, the band was placed on the sixth position in the NME The Future 50 chart. In October of the same year, the band was called one of the “Top Ten Bands with Buzz” at MTV’s Music Marathon.
Soon after the success of their debut album, The XX embarked on an extensive tour of the North America and Europe. They performed with some of the leading musicians of the time such as Micachu, The Big Pink and Friendly Flies. On the 18th of August, 2009, the debut single of the band, Crystalised went on to be featured as the Single of the Week on iTunes in the United Kingdom.
Their music has been used on media and television several times such as during the coverage of the Winter Olympics in the year 2010 by NBC, Person of Interest and more. Baria Qureshi departed from the band in late 2009. It is reported that she left because of exhaustion. However, Oliver Sim gave a statement later that this decision had been made by the rest of the group members.
In September of the year 2010, The XX managed to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize. Their second album was released on the 7th of September, 2012. It was called Coexist. This too went on to become a big hit. The band continues to produce amazing music for their listeners and give exciting performances. One such performance is now awaiting your arrival.
