The River is one of the most anticipated plays on Broadway in 2014. The star-studded cast includes the trio of Hugh Jackman, Laura Donnelly and Cush Jumbo. The suspenseful thriller is penned down by British dramatist Jez Butterworth. The direction is provided by the critically acclaimed Ian Rickson, whereas Stephen Warbeck fills in as the composer.
A mystery and a thriller, the story is filled with suspense and explores darker themes that are faced by every human when in solitude and when in the company of one other.
One moonless evening highlights the events of a remote cabin where Hugh Jackman brings his new girlfriend for a night of trout-fishing. The nameless girlfriend, played by Laura Donnelly, is hesitant at first and is not easily persuaded. But giving in to what seems to be a promising intimate night between the two; she agrees to join him in the dark.
Moments after the happy resolution, everything takes a turn for the worse. The audience is left with nameless boyfriend looking bewildered as he cannot find her girlfriend. His first reaction is to call the police and report her as missing. As the investigation ensues, the girlfriend returns to him out of the blue. But who appears to be his girlfriend is not the same girl who went missing.
As the night grows old, everything loses its meaning and becomes something it is not. The fusion of memory and desire concludes that all that matters in the end is the truth. As events line up, everything that has been ignored earlier and taken for granted begins to unfold, making the thriller one of the best plays of its genre.
The show first premiered at the Royal Court in 2012. The play received widespread critical acclaim for its genuine plot and suspenseful thrills. The play is written by the talented Jez Butterworth. He is renowned for the hit play Jerusalem. The talented direction of Ian Rickson has been seen in the plays Jerusalem, Old Times and Mojo among others. Ultz and Charles Balfour's creativity livens up the stage, making the set appear as realistic as possible. The ambience created by the lighting provides the cabin with an intimate atmosphere, which at the same time reeks of doubt and disbelief.
Hugh Jackman will play the lead role in The River. The famous Hollywood star has a wide range of successful films, musicals and plays in his repertoire. His character, the buffed-up Wolverine in the X-Men series, has been appreciated worldwide and has become his signature role. His other notable movies include The Prestige, Van Helsing, Australia and the musical film Les Misérables among many others. The Australian actor, singer and dancer won the Tony Award for playing Peter Allen in the hit musical The Boy from Oz. He has also starred in theatricals like Oklahoma!, Carousel and Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway.
The River is all set to open up on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The thirteen week limited engagement is highly anticipated because of the three leading actors. Alongside High Jackman, Laura Donnelly will take the stage. She is making her debut on Broadway after starring in the West End production of the play. Joining the two is Cush Jumbo who achieved fame for her role in Julius Caesar. So grab The River tickets and get the chance to experience the thriller on Broadway.
