Currently headed by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the oldest symphony orchestra's still playing. The brainchild of Fritz Scheel, the orchestra was created in 1900, and since then, it has been actively arranging concerts around America. Part of the Big Five (A five member list of the best orchestras in America), The Philadelphia Orchestra has a history of being a pioneer among it's contemporaries in terms of musical innovation and interpretation.
The orchestra have had some of the most competent and able conductors leading the orchestra in the past, including Fritz Scheel. Not only have they established a name for their orchestral performances, but have also credited with electronic recordings of their music, unlike any other orchestra in the country. Additionally, they have also produced and recorded film scores which have resulted in their fame. The eighth and current conductor and Musical Director, Nézet-Séguin continues the tradition of providing phenomenal music and great entertainment.
As the eighth musical director of the orchestra, Nézet-Séguin brings a unique perspective and a vast expanse of talent to The Philadelphia Orchestra. With The New York Times dubbing Nézet-Séguin as "the ideal music director," and "phenomenal," it is clear that orchestra is in capable hands. As a conductor, Yannick enjoys a repertoire of around thirty orchestral works, including pieces by some of the greatest names in classic music such as Beethoven, Debussy, Lapointe, Mahler and Bruckner. In addition to that, he has a discography consisting of various vocal recitals and operas.
In 2000, this Canadian born conductor became the music director of Orchestre Métropolitain. Up till 2008, Yannick remained the artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain. In 2008, he was honored with the position of being the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Simultaneously, he was also given the post of musical director of Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. There is no doubt that the experience that Yannick has had will give The Philadelphia Orchestra the musical direction that is worthy of its status.
Accompanying Yannick, the conductor, The Philadelphia Orchestra has some of the most accomplished artists. It features a collection of the crème de la crème of musicians. Cristian Macelaru joins Yannick as the Associate Conductor and Charles Dutoit comes on board as the Conductor Laureate. With a huge collection of instruments being featured, including harps, violins, fluted, clarinets, violins, trumpets, trombones, piano and bassoons, the team of Orchestra is filled with talented instrumentalists. Seasoned players such as David Bilger, David Kim, Michael Stairs and Kirsten Johnson have come on board to give the Orchestra a massive powerhouse of capability.
Since 1900, the orchestra has performed at The Academy of Music. From 2001 onwards, they have continued to honor the tradition by returning to The Academy and performing there for one week every year. Every summer is spent at Mann Center for the Performing Arts, among other venues. The Orchestra is back with its annual concert series performed at Carnegie Hall.
