Initially formed in 1954, the original lineup consisted of Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and Dave Guard. The folk group started playing at the San Francisco Bay Arena nightclub and soon became a popular local live act. The group’s peak era began in 1958 with the release of its self titled debut album. The album climbed the Billboard charts week after week, landing at number one spot on the Pop Albums chart. Tracks like ‘Scotch and Soda’, ‘Tom Dooley’ and ‘Three Jolly Coachman’ were a hit amongst the audience, helping the album reach Gold status after selling over half a million copies. The track ‘Tom Dooley’ also won the ‘Best Country and Western Performance Award’ at the inaugural ceremony of the Grammy Awards in 1959. Due to Kingston Trio’s success, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences created a previously non-existent folk category for the following year’s Grammy Award ceremony.
In 1959, the group released four albums including two number one releases, ‘Here We Go Again!’ and ‘At Large’. All four albums remained amongst the Top 10 position on the Billboard charts simultaneously. ‘In Large’ bagged another Grammy Award for the group in the newly created ‘Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording’ category. In 1960, the Trio produced two more number one albums ‘String Along’ and ‘Sold Out’, setting a record of releasing four successive number one albums. By this time, almost all released albums of the Trio were certified gold statuses in the country. They had sold over eight million records and were responsible for more than fifteen percent of Capital Record’s sales. The group was making several TV appearances while playing over two hundred engagements every year.
Over the years, The Kingston Trio has gone through several changes in the lineup. Some of the group’s past members include Bob Haworth, Roger Gambill and John Stewart. The Kingston Trio has set several chart records throughout its epic musical journey. They are still ranked on several Billboard charts such as ‘Most Consecutive Weeks at Number 1 Chart Position’, ‘Most Total Weeks Albums Charts in One Year’, ‘Most Consecutive Top 40 Albums’, ‘Most Weeks Charting a Number 1 Album’ and ‘Most Number 1 Albums’.
