Born in England, Johnny Clegg showed an interest in street music of Zulu at a very young age. Before embarking on his musical journey, Johnny Clegg participated in different Zulu dance competitions and won most of them. In the 70s, the young talented star entered the music scene by forming his first South African band called, Juluka. The Zulu musician, Sipho Mchunu joined hands with Clegg on this one and together they provided the music lovers with some songs that are popular to this date.
"Universal Men", their debut album, earned them enough attention to make them more determined in making more music. Following the partial success of their first record, the band released a series of albums; out of which five went Gold and two received a Platinum certification. Juluka were soon seen performing live in Europe as well as several other countries, but by the late 80s, Johnny Clegg parted ways with the band and formed a new one called, Savuka.
Their second album, "Shadow Man" turned out to be a worldwide success, selling over two million copies, topping the charts in France, Canada and the US. The band produced many hit songs such as, Warsaw 1943, Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World and One (Hu)'man one vote. Out of all countries, Savuka garnered record fan following from France, becoming an accomplished foreign band. In the late 80s, a headline appeared in French newspaper, which said, "White man singing black music, out sells black man singing white music."
Apart from his joint ventures, Johnny Clegg has also enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing a number of studio albums like, "Third World Child", "New World Survivor", "One Life" and "Human". Many of his songs including, Asimbonanga (Mandela), Scatterlings of Africa and I Call Your Name are still quite popular. For his years of excellence in music, Johnny Clegg has been honored with prestigious awards and titles including, Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (Knight of Arts and Letters) by the French Government, honorary doctorate in music from the University of the Witwatersrand, honorary doctorate in music from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, Billboard Music Award and the South African Presidential Ikhamanga Award presented to him by the president of South Africa.
