Born in 1904, Glenn Miller was raised in Iowa. At the age of eleven, Glenn started playing in the town orchestra after buying a trombone. During his high school years, a new musical style 'dance band music', started to attract Glenn who formed his own band along with some friends. By the end of high school, he had chosen to purse a professional music career. Glenn enrolled at the University of Colorado in 1923. He usually spent time away from college and tried to play at any event he could get. Eventually he dropped out of the university and landed with "Joseph Schillinger" who taught him the "Schillinger technique" and helped him compose his future signature melody "Moonlight Serenade". Glenn started touring with various groups and in 1926 joined the group of the renowned bandleader Ben Pollack. He also worked on his own compositions and arrangements, which led him towards his first arrangement along with Benny Goodman known as "Room 1411". During the early thirties Glenn worked as a freelance musicians for various bands, playing trombone to earn money. In 1928, he was featured in an "All Star Orchestra" that included Joe Venuti, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. The following year he was hired by Red McKenzie, an original vocalist, to play on two records "If I Could Be I With You" and "Hello Lola", which became classic jazz hits later.
In 1937, Glenn Miller formed his first band while working on several musical compositions. However, the group disbanded after only a year as it failed to distinguish itself amongst the crowd. Glenn was discouraged but he realized that he needed to create an innovative and unique sound to differentiate his music. He went to New York and started working on a distinct sound that involved the harmonization of three saxophones within a single octave while a tenor saxophone held the same note as the clarinet play a melodic arrangement. Glenn hired a saxophonist "Wilbur Schwartz" who complemented Glenn's musical arrangements and unique sound. The new Glenn Miller band managed to fascinate and captivate masses with their new and fresh sound and eventually led Glenn towards becoming one of the greatest Bandleaders of a popular Big Band. He started playing at prestigious venues and concert halls. The Glen Island Casino performance in New York managed to set a record opening night with an attendance of almost two thousand individuals. Their recordings such as "Tuxedo Junction" set records for selling thousands and thousands of copies within the first week. In 1942, Glenn's "Chattanooga Choo Choo" earned him the first gold record by RCA Victor. In the following years, Glenn joined the war effort and became the leader for the Army band.
