The group was formed in Chicago by the very talented, Jacob Carey (Jake) and Ezekial Carey (Zeke) who worked on bass and 2nd tenor respectively. The two Carey brothers formed this music group with their cousins Paul Wilson and John E. Soon after the group's formation, Lewis who joined later was replaced with Sollie McElroy. Together they produced their first single with the Chance Records by the name of "If I Can't Have You". Although a moderate success, the single allowed the band to establish themselves in the music industry, at least locally. This was closely followed by another single, "That's My Desire" which too, was not a massive hit but managed to impress the audience.
Soon after, the Flamingos signed a music deal with DJ Al Benson's Parrot Records in 1953. It was with this record label that they released the song, "I'm Yours". The Flamingos again changed their recording company and moved on to Chess Records. It was through the help of this record company that the band was able to produce its first chart hit called, "I'll Be Home" which debuted at the number fifth spot on the Billboard R&B charts. Their other singles with the record label, such as "A kiss from your lips" and "the vow" also gained a lot of fame.
The Flamingos success was not only confined to the music industry because they made their debut in Hollywood by appearing in the 1956 movie, "Rock, Rock, Rock". Produced by Alan Freed, the movie became a huge hit and gained a lot of critical acclaim for the band. It was in 1956 that Tommy Hunt and Terry "Buzzy" Johnson also joined the ensemble. It was after the two members joined the group that they signed a deal with the George Goldner's End Records and produced their smash hit single, "Lovers Never Say Goodbye". The single won the hearts of the audience who were swept away by their soulful music and powerful voice.
Apart from the appreciation that the band has received both by critics and fans, the band has many awards to its name. In 1996, The Flamingo bagged the "Rhythm & Foundation Pioneer Award". Enthralled by the performance of Jake Carey, Tommy Hunt, Zeke Carey and Terry Johnson, the band managed to get its name added to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000 as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the very next year. Not only this, the band was also inducted into the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame in 2004.
