Details of The Bangles and the Ticket Luck value
The Bangles
The Bangles
The Bangles were a popular pop/punk rock band of the 1980s from LA California and were part of the new generation of all-women bands, a trend first started off by The Go-Go's.
The Bangles - A Brief History (1981-1983)
The Bangles originally started out in 1981 as a band from Los Angeles, California called The Supersonic Bangs. This name was later shortened to the Bangs. At that time, there was a new music trend in LA referred to as the Paisley Underground scene by which the band was greatly inspired. This music trend included groups that played a mix of 1960s influenced folk-rock and jangle-pop but with a modern punk/garage tone.
The band's original line up included Susanna Hoffs (vocals/guitar), Vicki Peterson (guitars/vocals), Debbi Peterson (drums/vocals) and Annette Zilinskas (bass/vocals). They recorded just one single as the Bangs but were soon forced to change their name to The Bangles after a band from New Jersey with the same name threatened to sue.
The Bangles released their self titled debut album in 1982 under a record label owned by their manager Miles Copeland, called Faulty Products. After recording the first album, Zilinskas left the band to be replaced by Michael Steele.
The Bangles' Rise to Success
In 1984, the Bangles released their first full length album titled All Over the Place, which reflected a strong pop style and featured popular singles such as "Hero Takes a Fall" and "Going Down To Liverpool". The record attracted critical acclaim and was further made popular by a video featuring Leonard Nimoy for the track "Liverpool". The album also attracted the attention of popular singer and songwriter Prince who later wrote the song "Manic Monday" for the band. Manic Monday was released in the album titled Different Light (1986) and went on to become a number 2 hit in the UK, US and in Germany and even outsold Prince's own record "Kiss". Different Light was the band's best selling album and included another number one hit "Walk like an Egyptian". The album put the band in mainstream as radio and MTV favorites.
Although the success of Different Light had put the Bangles in the mainstream of radio and MTV, it created friction between the band members when the media began to single out Hoffs as the lead singer of the group. Hoffs media attention grew further when in1987 she starred in a film, The Allnighter, which was directed by her mother, Tamar Simon-Hoffs. Further the firing of their manager Miles Copeland worsened the dissent among the band members. However, despite the band's personal differences they soon had another number 2 hit in the US with a cover version of Simon and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade Of Winter" from the soundtrack of the film Less Than Zero. At around the same time, their melancholic track "If she knew what she wants" reached the German Top 20.
In 1988 the band released their album Everything which was a multi-platinum smash hit containing one of the band's most popular songs, the soft ballad "Eternal Flame" which became another worldwide number 1 hit.
The Bangles Split
Despite their great success, The Bangles were unable to reconcile their personal differences and the band split up shortly after. Sussanna Hoffs embarked upon a solo career and Vicki Peterson went on to tour as a member of the Go-Go's and the Continental Drifters. Debbie Peterson had a short-lived career with Siobhan Maher under the name of Kindred Spirit, while Steele lived in semi-retirement in California.
Hoffs released a solo album named When You're a Boy, which was produced by Bangles producer David Kahne. The album was not very successful with just one minor hit "My Side of the Bed" and Hoffs was dropped from Columbia Records whilst recording her second album. Hoffs released her second solo album in 1996 but it too received a disappointing response. Later Hoffs married film director Jay Roach (director of Austin Powers and Meet the Parents).
The Bangles Reunite
The marriage of Hoffs to director Jar Roach eventually led to the band's reunion in 2000. Vicki Peterson joined and contributed songs from the New Orleans band the Continental Drifters, which received great reviews. The same year the band went on tour and was also made a member of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
In 2001-2002, The Bangles recorded a new album Doll Revoultion which was released in early 2003. The album featured such tracks as "Stealing Rosemary", "Ride the Ride", "Nickel Romeo", and the single "Something That You Said" with a title track writeen by Elvis Costello. The "Doll Revolution" album gained siginficatnt success only in Germany after the Bangles performed in Germanys biggest TV-Show "Wetten dass". However, it failed to make an impact in the UK, US or Australia.
In 2005, the Bangles announced the departure of band member Michael Steele, who was replaced by Abby Travis for live appearances. Travis is not an official member of the band. On December 31, 2005, they reunited again to perform "Hazy Shade of Winter" at Times Square and later performed "Eternal Flame" as part of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2006. Light My Way, the band's third holiday single, is available as a download via iTunes. In August 2007 The Bangles released their first official live DVD Return To Bangleonia - Live In Concert.
