Coming from a family of music-lovers, with father being an arranger and pianist and mother a gospel singing teacher, Mahal grew listening to Jazz and Blues music. His parents owned a shortwave radio so he was exposed to different genres and popular world music at a very young age, an early influence that is well reflected in his music. Such family environment encouraged him to learn the piano and he mastered various other instruments such as banjo, harmonica and guitar. He learned to play different styles of Lightenin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and other Blues legends.
Later years greatly experienced a revival in the music in American, African and Asian regions which aroused Mahal to study African-American music in depth. The study enhanced his understanding of the native and international music and helped him define his style that he wanted to pursue. Moved by a dream, he assumed a musical pseudonym 'Taj Mahal' and formed his very first band 'Elektras' in Massachusetts. Soon after graduating, Mahal headed to Los Angeles and formed a band in collaboration with Ry Cooder and other artists. The band was called 'Rising Sons' and launched its first and last album as a band under Columbia Records. During those same years, Taj Mahal teamed up with many Blues celebrities including Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.
Combined knowledge and broadened music wisdom laid the foundation for Taj Mahal's early albums which showed signs of his excellence and diversity and became one of the common characteristics of his music. During his adventurous music course, he also produced soundtracks for different movies among which Sounder, Evolution and Mo' Roots are noticeable. In 1980s he moved to Hawaii which became his new hometown and exploration center where he devoted his efforts in understanding local cultural myths and Hawaiian music. Years of experience coupled with his expanded knowledge about world music resulted in the release of his commercially and critically successful albums. These include 'Mule Bone', 'Dancing the Blues', 'Phantom Blues', 'An Evening of Acoustic Music' and 'Senor Blues'. 'Senor Blues' (1997) and 'Shoutin' in Key' (2000) won Grammy Award for 'Best Contemporary Blues Album'. The legendary artist continued exploring and touring different countries and produced a marvelous legacy of Blues with a tinge of Asian, American-African and Caribbean tunes. In 2008, Mahal released 'Maestro: Celebrating 40 years' under Heads Up International Label which assembled various guest artists in a twelve track album for the celebration of a remarkable forty year music career of the star. To date, the living legend passionately makes music and performs worldwide with his greatest hits of time.
