Sunfest is an art and music festival that is held every year in early May, usually the first week, at West Palm Beach, Florida. The festival has existed since 1982 and has become Florida’s biggest music extravaganza. Each year, it has an attendance of above 270,000 visitors. The festivities and the celebrations of the crowd that ensues have had a positive impact on the city, lifting its spirits and celebrating art. Each year, as May approaches hundreds of thousands of Sunfest tickets are sold, not only to people in Florida, but neighboring states as well. Every year, the festival is organized by Palm Beach County’s Sunfest, which is a non-profit organization and a private entity. It has now functioned for 30 years, gathering new talent and old alike to celebrate music.
The management consists of a board of directors, 21 in total and 25 committees. It also consists of 2000 volunteers, 100 company based sponsors and a permanent staff of eight that works all year round. Other than from the sponsors and the volunteers, funds also come from the “Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council” and the “Palm Beach County Cultural Council”. Also sponsoring the Sunfest festival are the State of Florida itself, the “Florida Arts Council”, “Division of Cultural Affairs” and the “Department of the State”. The Sunfest festival itself is organized in the West Palm Beach on the Waterway stretching from the Lakeview Avenue to the Banyan Boulevard. Each year, a different lineup is set to perform, with a different headliner for each day. This year’s performers have been announced. The Sunfest tickets this time around will be sold for performances by Counting Crows, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, The Fray, Creed, Third Eye Blind, Wiz Khalifa, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, All American Rejects, and the Outlaws just to name a few. At the Sunfest, it is not just mainstream music that is appreciated. Performers like Herbie Hancock with his jazz tones and his versatile music will also be present.
Hancock is one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of this time, although it would be unfair to box his style as jazz alone. His music touches on funk, rock n roll and a bit of electronic as well. Still, his take on most classic tunes is what keeps his audiences on their toes, willing for more. His tunes with the likes of “Chameleon” and “Watermelon Man” have the ability to start off as jazzy, lounge tracks and then break into a rock and roll groove—perfect for a festival that celebrates music of all kinds. Their energetic performances are just what the festival might need to set the mood. Their music has also dabbled in reggae, soul and funk and that is the sound that has come to be most associated with them. They have only recently exploded into the mainstream when their single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” hit the charts and into the top 20.
The Sunfest festival would be incomplete without some dance music—which is why Passion Pit will also be performing. The music they will bring to the table is more house sounding, with synch beats, which are both bouncy and floor filling. With their new album on its way, Passion Pit have promised to perform some of their new tunes at the festival, giving their fans all the more reason to grab hold of Sunfest tickets. Of course their old tracks, such as their popular single, “To Kingdom Come” will not be forgotten and will be performed at the festival.
