Introduced to the music scene in 1986, Sugar Ray started off as a funk metal group. They gained popularity with the release of their hit single titled “Fly,” that came out in 1997. This song was quite different from their earlier songs. It included elements of pop rock that later led the band to change their musical style move more towards the pop music genre. The albums that came out later, focused on this new style and earned the band various number one hit singles that included “When It's Over,” “Someday,” “Every Morning,” among others. Before Sugar Ray, Stan Frazier and Rodney Sheppard were in a band called The Tories during the late 80's. When Mark McGrath and Murphy Karges became a part of the group, the name of the band was changed to Shrinky Dinks. However, when the band signed up with Atlantic Records, the name of the group was changed once more and they finally became Sugar Ray. Their first album, Lemonade and Brownies came out in 1995. Even though this album did not produce a hit, yet it got the band a lot of recognition in the alternative music circuit. In 1997, the second album Floored came out. This album produced two hit singles, “Mean Machine,” and “Speed Home California.” Their songs were featured in the Play Station game called Road Rash 3D. The Nintendo 64's counterpart of the game Road Rush 64 also featured their songs.
The debut song “Fly,” came out in the summer of 1997. This song was featured on their second album. The song was in collaboration with reggae musician Super Cat. Their second album, Floored, went double platinum by the RIAA. Their third album came out in 1999 and was called 14:59. Their song, “Every Morning,” from the album reached the number third slot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Another single followed this song, “Someday,” that got a lot of airplay and was also positioned on the number seventh spot in the US. The album was a success and the RIAA certified is as triple platinum.
Sugar Ray has collaborated with The Alkaholiks, Loud Rocks, Incubus and Crazy Town among others. The band produced the cover version of the song, “Spinning Away,” , originally by Brian Eno and John Cale's for the Leonardo Dicaprio movie, The Beach, in 2000. This was followed with the release of another album in 2001, called, Sugar Ray. The album did well and garnered a few hit singles. In 2003, In Pursuit of Leisure came out. Two years later, in 2005, a Greatest Hits album of the band was released. After the release of this album, the band was relatively inactive for a few years before coming back again in 2010. The lineup of the band changed, however and with the new lineup, the band continued to perform in some of the most electrifying live shows ever.
