He was always interested in playing different instruments and learned how to do that and this one skill set has played a big part in making him the star he is today.
Sufjan Stevens took his first steps into the music industry when he became a member of a folk-rock band, Marzuki and later joined Danielson Famile as an instrumentalist. He recorded and released his debut studio album, 'A Sun Came' in the year 2000 through Asthmatic Kitty Records which was owned by his stepfather. After sometime, he moved to the New York City to enroll himself in a writing program at the New School for Social Research and soon developed an interest in writing a novel someday but it took him back to songwriting.
While Sufjan Stevens was still in The Big Apple, he recorded and composed his second studio album, 'Enjoy Your Rabbit' which was based upon the animals of the Chinese zodiac. He followed that up by releasing 'Michigan,' the first album to be a part of his, 'Fifty States Project,' a collection of instrumentals and folk songs inspired by his home town of Michigan. The album included odes to different places like, Flint, Detroit, the Upper Peninsula and vacation areas like Tahquamenon Falls.
