Steven Wilson is an English musician from Kingston Upon Thames in London, the capital of the UK and the world's most famous city. He is a rock musician who is also an accomplished songwriter and an unmatched record producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, singer, songwriter and founder of Porcupine Tree, one of the most popular progressive rock bands today. His music, however, transcends genres, often incorporating influences from the many sub-genres of rock to metal to jazz and even ambient music. He has been active since 1983, with thousands of Steven Wilson tickets sold to date for his many electrifying concerts.
Added to being the frontman and founder of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson has also been a part of and played with the likes of Blackfield, Incredible Expanding Mindfuck, No-Man, Bass Communion, Continuum, Opeth, Storm Corrosion and Orphaned Land. He has also founded bands and projects such as Blackfield and No-Man, as well as Storm Corrosion with Mikael Akerfeldt, frontman of Opeth. He plays a large number of instruments including the guitar, keyboard, bass, hammered dulcimer, concert harp and flute. He is also an audio engineer and record producer who lives today in London.
At the age of six, Steven Wilson developed an affinity for music through his parents, who listened to Pink Floyd and Donna Summer, who would go on to influence much of his latter music. Pink Floyd would go on to influence Porcupine Tree's music with Donna Summer's music influencing No-Man, his band with Tim Bowness. At the age of twelve, he began experimenting with music after finding an old nylon string classical guitar. His father, an electronic engineer, built him a multi-track tape machine with a Vocoder, leading to more experimenting with sound and recording.
Steven Wilson began playing live in a number of bands at a young age, being part of bands such as Altamont and Karma. He joined bands such as Pride of Passion, expiring more and more with music, diving into industrial and avant-garde music at one point. In 1986, he founded No-Man, then known as No Man Is An Island (Except The Isle of Man). He founded Porcupine Tree soon after, evolving each and releasing music via record labels such as Delerium Records.
In 1992, Porcupine Tree released its now famous song which charted high on the NME indie chart. Similarly, No-Man's debut album was released, followed by a tour of Japan. Fast forward to the new millennium and Porcupine Tree becomes one of the most successful rock bands, releasing music through Roadrunner Records and Atlantic Records. The band's albums have received Grammy Award nominations with Sound And Vision ranking them third on their Album of the Year list. He is also a columnist for Rolling Stone magazine and has collaborated with Opeth, Dirk Serries, OSI, JBK, Marillion, Orphaned Land, Theo Travis, Paatos, Yoko Ono, Cipher, Fish, and Anja Garbarek amongst others.
One of the greatest rock musicians of this age, Steven Wilson is without doubt an artist any true rock fan needs to see live in concert, preferably after buying Steven Wilson tickets.
