Born in Belfast, Sir James received education in London and Paris before embarking on his music career with renowned orchestras like Sadlers Wells & Royal Covent Garden, Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. His startling performances soon landed him the coveted position of the Principal Flute with the Berlin Philharmonic, where he played under the direction of Herbert Von Karajan.
Since the launch of his career in 1975, his tours have involved numerous hit acts with the world's leading orchestras and conductors. Besides, his unique versions of the masterworks by Mozart, Vivaldi and Bach, the programs of Sir James also carry a whole body of new contemporary flute music. These works are commissioned by and for him by composers like Corigiliano, Amram, Bolcom and Lieberman.
Sir James holds a strong presence in the music industry of Europe. He has played at numerous occasions and has performed in venues across the continent which include the Salzburg Festival, Windsor Castle, the Royal Albert Hall, the Vatican and the National Concert Hall. Among his audiences include government and royal dignitaries like the late Princess Diana, President Clinton, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, the Earl and Duchess of Wessex, the Empress of Japan and Pope John Paul II to name a prominent few.
The flute player performed with Pink Floyd at the memorable Berlin Wall concert. Besides that, he was part of the Noble Peace Concert in Norway, and also had the honor to perform before Queen Elizabeth II at the G7 Conference hosted at Buckingham Palace, London. In 2006, he received an invitation to perform at the White House in Washington City. The musician has shared the stage with a number of famed artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, John Denver, Henry Mancini, Cleo Laine and Chieftains. He has also recently become the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Mozart Players.
The album "My Magic Flute" is produced through the collective efforts by the Mozart musicians. It features the work of Sinfonia Varsovia, harpist Catrin Finch, Lady Galway and Sir James himself. Together the legends have teamed up to produce nothing less than a masterpiece. The record consists of a new version of Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp. Additionally it carries new instrument arrangements of his (Mozart) most popular vocal and instrumental compositions. Other hit tracks from the assortment include Ruhe sanft mein holdes Leben, Ronda alla Turca and Andante.
As a humanitarian, Sir James is a devoted promoter of arts. Between his hectic performing schedules, he always finds time to share his expertise and experiences with the amateur musicians/flutists of today. He has authored several books on flute as well. His recently published piece of writing called Twelve Studies of Boehm, Op 15 has been received very well by music enthusiasts. He supports various charity organizations such as UNICEF, SOS and FARA. Sir James and Lady Galway are patrons of a charity called Future Talent. Through their contributions and guidance, they make music education accessible to the young people aspiring to make it big in the world of music.
