Sinead O'Connor hails from Glenageary in County Dublin, Ireland. She is an alternative rock and pop rock star, who has been active in the music industry since 1986. Sinead O'Connor rose to fame in the late eighties with the release of the album, The Lion and the Cobra. Ton Ton Macoute rose to fame particularly because of O'Connor's singing. She signed onto Ensign Records and began working on her first solo album. She was managed by Fachtna O'Ceallaigh, the former head of Mother Records, U2's record label. Her first major gig saw her pen the song Heroine with The Edge, U2's guitarist. The song was recorded for the movie Captive.
O'Connor then began recording and producing her own album, which was released in 1987. The Lion and the Cobra was a massive hit; it was soon certified gold and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category.
In 1988, she appeared on the Late Night Show with David Letterman and sang the song Mandinka, which was a popular hit in the US. Yet another of the album's songs, Troy, became a major dance hit in the US years later.
In 1990, O'Connor released her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. The album was ranked by NME as the Second Best Album of the Year and was praised by fans and critics alike. It was the song Nothing Compares 2 U from this album that propelled her to international fame. It reached number one in many countries, including the UK, Germany and Australia. In the US, the song grabbed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and received two Grammy Award nominations. O'Connor's second album won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Since then, O'Connor gone on to record many more albums and has contributed songs to several Red Hot Organization albums. She has also recorded songs for several movies, working with the likes of Bono. In 2014, she released her most recent album, I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss.
