Formed in 1977, the band originated from a short lived punk group called ‘Johnny & The Self-Abusers’. The band went through several lineup changes during its initial years. The group achieved mainstream success with their sixth studio album ‘New Gold Dream’, released in 1982. The album reached number three on the UK Albums chart, number two on the New Zealand Albums chart and Top 10 position in Switzerland and France. It was certified Platinum in UK and Gold in Canada.
The group’s golden era began in 1984 with their chart topping album ‘Sparkle in the Rain’. Their first number one album in UK and New Zealand, ‘Sparkle in the Rain’ also went platinum in UK. The album was followed by a string of platinum and multi-platinum albums including ‘Real Life’ and ‘Street Fighting Years’.
