Seth Lakeman
Any discussion about English folk music would be incomplete without the mention of a famous singer, musician and song writer of this generation, Seth Lakeman. Born in the countryside town called Yelverton located in Dartmoore in 1977, his entry into the music world was due to his own family.
He used to play music with his parents and two brothers, Sean and Sam at an early age. It was in 1994 that Seth along with his two brothers launched their first album named Three Piece Suit. It had got a lot of critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Later the same year they were invited by the Yorkshire based singers Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby to join them in their tour of Portugal.
On return they all formed a group called Equation, which got much publicity and success. They arranged three albums together and toured all around the major countries like United States, Europe and the UK as well. They enjoyed fame and fortune.
Seth left the band in 2001 to pursue his solo career as a folk artist. It is reported that his brothers had joined their other friends to have new dimensions in their careers. It was also claimed that he was the only group member having the least success after adopting the solo career. He used to help his sister in law Cara Dillon in establishing her career and composed all the songs of her first album. At the same time he kept on witting and composing songs in the beautiful backdrop of Dartmoore as his inspiration. He wanted to share his mystical experiences with the world related with hid home town.
His first solo album The Punch Bowl was a tribute to all such traditions and folklore. Unfortunately it got no response from the audience and critics and well. It was commented in general that his voice was not suitable for telling the folk tales in a musical and dramatic way. Although he kept his expectations extremely low while releasing the second album named Kitty Jay in 2004. It was recorded in with the low budget of only (?300) in his brother's kitchen. It was presented in front of people at the Dartmoore prison for the first time but unlike its predecessor, Kitty jay was highly appreciated and accepted by the people. It contained the story of a maid being deflowered and abandoned by a squire's son and how her grave tells the story to every visitor in the area.
The album got him included in the Mercury Music Prize race of 2005. He was suddenly in the top of everybody's list and considered to be the new pinup boy of the England. He got every kind of press coverage and commercial success.
His third album Freedom Fields got the same response from the audience, even it added to the modest and earthly manner of his personality and music as well. EMI stepped forward to re-release of the same album with remixes in the year 2006. He has got an entirely new promotion on television and radio, being an iconic figure for the young generation too. His music has given an entirely new meaning to the folklore. He has his own natural style as well as a charisma to add to the great world of music. He has toured all around the world and attended numerous festivals.
He was also nominated in the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 and he has won two awards in 2007. Additionally he has won an award for 'Singer of the Year' and two Folk Awards for the 'Best Album' by the BBC Radio
