One of the hottest comics in the country, Patton Oswalt, the voice of "Ratatouille" in the hit film, is also a former finalist. Hundreds from all over the region audition and only 32 are chosen to compete in the course of 24 shows over 26 days.
The final rankings are based on taking the performers' five best scores. At each spot, each comic has 15 minutes. This year"s contest began on Wednesday November 5 and continued through Sunday November 30.
The performing artists included Just For Laughs Festival Homegrown winner Tyler Hawkins from Edmonton, NYC comic Todd Lynn ('Comedy Central Presents'), 2007 Boston Comedy Festival winner Tommy Savitt, Denver Comedy Competition runner-up Todd Johnson, and Portland's Rylee Newton ('Premium Blend'), plus a lot more.
After 23 shows in 26 days in 19 Washington venues, The 29th annual Seattle International Standup Comedy Competition winner was Brooklyn native, Tommy Savitt. He walked away with $5000 and a recording contract with Uproar Entertainment the national comedy label that represents comedians Dana Gould, Brian Regan and John Pinette, as well as the entire National Lampoon catalog.
He"s a regular on the Bob and Tom Show heard daily on Sirius Radio, in addition to appearances in dozens of national commercials over the past decade. He has worked best on bringing laughter to the men in forces on multiple USO tours to Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Japan, South Korea, Bahrain, the United Kingdom and more and has made his mark on the Canadian comedy circuit.
On the last night of this year"s competition, it came down to Savitt and Nate Jackson whose energy is incredibly infectious but it's hard to compete with Savitt's comfort level on stage. About halfway through his set last night, he seemed completely relaxed and confident, like he already knew he was going to win. Nate Jackson came 2nd and was warded $2000.
Like many good comedians, Jackson got his start in comedy on a dare from a friend at a stand-up comedy contest in college. From there, he went on to become a finalist in 2005"s SIC Competition before moving to California where he worked his way to finalist of the 2008 California Comedy Festival.
Third place was taken by Todd Johnson, from Idaho. Justin Rupple walked away with fourth and $1300. Though Canadian Lars Callieou who brought home fifth and $1200 was funny but he was not memorable at all. In all, a total of $15,000 in cash prizes has been awarded.
In 2006 Damonde Tschritter -Vancouver Damonde won the contest and became the first Canadian winner in the 27 year history of the Seattle International Comedy Competition.
Damonde"s credits include CTV"s Comedy Now, three appearances on CBC"s Madly Off In All Directions, Just For Laughs, Chicago Comedy Festival, New York Comedy Festival, HBO"s USA vs. Canada stand-up weekend, creator of the Vancouver Comedy Festivals "Glossy Awards Show", writer/ producer and star of the film Comedy Club - nominated for best picture at the 2000 Reel Madness Comedy Film Festival. He has also worked in films and TV shows.
In 2004 Gabriel Rutledge, 30, of Olympia, Washington, won the competition narrowly defeating Jen Kober of Lake Charles, Louisiana, who came on strong at the end and was very nearly the second woman in history to win.
She had to settle for runner-up and $2200, squeaking by 3rd Place Winner Tony Boswell of Chicago ($1700), 4th Place Joe Klocek of San Francisco ($1400), and Vancouver based Vic Lippucci ($1200).
Next year will be an entirely new crop of comedians vying for the prize and winning the hearts of millions!.
