Schoolboy Q had a keen interest in music since a very young age. He took this interest up a notch when he turned 21 and started working on his music. In 2006, the artist joined Top Dawg Entertainment and collaborated with various local artists like Black Hippy cohorts Jay Rock and Ab Soul to produce music. As his talent started being recognized in the music scene, he came up with his debut mixtape "Schoolboy turned Hustla" in 2008. Earning a lot acclaim, the mixtape also helped in launching the career of the famous West Coast rapper, Tyga. After the release of the album, Schoolboy Q entered into a contract with Top Dawg Entertainment and formed the band Black Hippy which included his label-mates and other like collaborators like Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar.
In 2009, Schoolboy Q came up with another mixtape "Gangsta & Soul" which included some of his best tunes. His first project with the label Top Dawg, the album garnered him a lot of popularity. During 2010, the artist toured all over the United States for the promotion of this album and spent the remaining part of his time working on his independent album, "Setbacks". The record hit the shelves in 2011 and scored the 100th spot on the US Billboard 200 chart. Not only this, the album also sold over a thousand digital copies in its very first week and proved to be a huge breakthrough for him.
Following the release of his debut album in 2011, Schoolboy Q embarked on his first tour. At his very first show in Key Club in West Hollywood, he enthralled the crowd with his energetic performance. In September of the same year, Schoolboy Q announced the name of his second independent album, "Habits & Contradictions". The album was described as a continuation to his previous work, “Setbacks” and the first song from this album, Druggys Wit Hoes Again, featuring Ab-Soul, instantly became a fan-favorite. Other releases, "There He Go" and "Oxy Music" also had his fans humming his tunes.
Schoolboy Q has lately been in the news for being part of many live shows and his first studio album. In June 2013, he marked his entry at the 2013 BET Experience Music Festival along with famous artists like Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. He then went on to release his first single from the debut album, "Oxymoron". He was later also invited to "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" along with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, where he entertained the audience with the single, White Walls. Schoolboy Q also made his television debut when he performed the track, Man of the Year on the show, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". And that's not it; he has also been in limelight for his appearance on, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" where he was accompanied by BJ the Chicago Kid.
