Sarah Vowell remains one of the most prolific writers of our generation. She has authored six New York Times international best sellers. In all of her books, her main area of interest has been American History. Apart from being an accomplished author, Vowell has also written a number of essays on different subjects, she is a social commentator, an award winning journalist and an actor. She is also a contributing columnist for Salon.com, Esquire, The Los Angeles Times, Art forum and The Village Voice. As of November 17, 2011, she is the Senior Historical Context Contributor for the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Only 41 years of age, she brings a fresh perspective on a variety of different issues. Frequently referred to as a ‘social observer’, Sarah Vowell has established herself as an important member of the literary fraternity.
 
Sarah Vowell was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma and raised in Bozerman, Montana. She did her bachelor in Modern Languages and Literature from Montana State University and her Masters in Art History from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Vowell showed keen interest in writing from an early age, this interest was compounded with her love for history. She is also the president of the board of a nonprofit organization 826NYC.This organization serves as a tutoring portal for children in Brooklyn aged 6 to 18. Although now a resident of New York, the popular opinion is that she has maintained her Midwestern values and attitude.
 
Vowell penned her first book, Radio On: A Listeners Diary in 1997. It chronicled her observations after listening to the radio for a full one year. It is an insight into the American culture, about general priorities, concerns, beliefs and preferences. The book was a critical success as it set the tone for her future works dealing with a common theme of social review and its observations. Vowell, followed this up with a series of short essays discussing the general public’s obsession with the Godfather, aptly titled ‘Take the Connoli: stories from the new world’. It refers to a line by Peter Clamenza in the book where he kills one of his lieutenants and asks his partner to leave the Gun, and take the cannoli.
 
After writing another book containing short essays about American History, called ‘A Partly Cloudy Patriot’ in 2002, she changed gears and wrote ‘Assassination Vacation’ in 2005. The book deals with a dark period in American history where the author visits all the places American Presidents were assassinated. The author talks about the assassinations and more importantly about the political and ideological intolerance that has set in the American mindset since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It again serves as an observation on the author’s part to investigate the reason and the consequences that led to those tragedies. An audio book was released by Simon & Schuster featuring voices of Jon Stewart, Stephen King, Catherine Keener and Conan O Brein.

2008, saw Vowell write ‘Wordy Shipmates’ which deals with the settlements of Puritan colony in Massachusetts Bay Colony and Plymouth, Massachusetts. She is currently promoting her latest work ‘Unfamiliar Fishes’ .It  pokes fun at the American imperialistic desire to become a global power, as it records their attempt to take over countries like Guam, Cuba, Hawaii and Philippines in 1898. The term ‘Unfamiliar Fishes’ is in reference to what famous Hawaiian historian David Malo said about the Americans, when they landed in Hawaii. The book also takes a look at the American missionaries’ attempts to convert the Indigenous people of Hawaii to the American Way of life.
 
Throughout her career Sara Vowell, has been praised for her observational and analytical writing ability.
