Alaska has never been in the spotlight in the comity of American states. Whereas mainland states have understandably hogged attention in most issues of national interest & representation, Alaska has been limited to an aesthetically delightful quiet resort. General surprise was thus understandable when Republican Presidential candidate John McCain named a previously little-known woman as his running mate for the 2008 Presidential elections. Over the ensuing drama, all have grown acquainted with Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska, & her stern beliefs & widespread popularity amongst Americans. Yet it is those who knew Palin before the 2008 elections who can actually vouch for the steadfastness of this resolute Vice Presidential nominee, who bucked the trend & carved a political path on the true strength of her belief in the Republican agenda.
Sarah Louise Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, to parents with English, Irish & German roots. Showing an uncompromising competitive streak since her schooldays with riveting basketball & flute-playing performances, Palin went on to complete her bachelor's in communication with emphasis in journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. Palin's love affair with the Republican agenda started in 1982, when she first registered as one. Having worked as helper to her husband's fishing business & as sportscaster, Palin first gave a hint of her fierce political motivation by serving as a member of the Wasilla City Council from 1992 to 1996. Raising concerns over the spending of Wasilla sales tax money, Palin won elections against John Stein to become Mayor of Wasilla. Her popular reign stretched over both the permissible three-year stints, so that she stepped down in 2002. Palin decided to expand her playing field to state-level politics thereafter, running unsuccessfully for Republican lieutenant governor against Loren Leman. It was a setback that the relentless lady took in her stride, as she represented the Alaska Oil & Gas Conservation Commission with full dedication in the next four years that saw her uncover many ethics irregularities. Palin was all set to conquer in the 2006 gubernatorial elections, defeating Frank Murkowski to the Republican representation, & edging out Democrat Tony Knowles to become Alaska's first female & youngest Governor.
It was a momentous day in her political career, & Palin continued in the same vein to bring valuable reforms. She was rewarded when Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain, who was extraordinarily impressed by Palin's irrepressible drive, informed her of his decision to name her as his running mate for the 2008 elections. Palin thus broke ground as the first female Republican on the national party ticket. The ultimately unsuccessful campaign trail took her to many states & also raised many debates & controversies. An ethics investigation was launched after the elections campaign involving her selection by McCain. It undermined her authority as Governor, & an exasperated Palin finally resigned in 2009.
Palin's years in power have reaffirmed her image as a strict disciplinarian. As a Mayor, she was rigid on her campaign promises of term limits & tax money spending, & even fired the police chief on the grounds that he wasn't functioning entirely to her satisfaction. Property tax cuts & infrastructure improvements made Wasilla much more than a small resort in her time. Earmarked to oversee Alaska's oil & gas fields from 2002-06, Palin uncovered non-public ethics complaints & conflict of interests of fellow commission members with her steely resolve to root out corruption, forcing the resignations of Reudrich & Renkes. Governorship of Alaska brought her administrative skills to the fore as she approved a record $6.6 billion operating budget into law, supported the construction of the Gravina Island Bridge & signed a bill authorizing construction of the Alaska Gas Pipeline.
Palin's public image has been controversial at best. Coming into the limelight in the wake of her Vice Presidential campaign, Palin was under intense scrutiny. Ludicrous allegations of misuse of campaign funds for personal cosmetic purposes followed ethics investigations, as the gender bias became clear. But the forthright conservative has always stood up selflessly for her community & even landed the Alaska state commission in a pickle when she refused heir recommendation for a pay raise.
Sarah Palin is a seasoned politician who has groundbreaking achievements to her name. Standing up in the face of established norms requires courage & a comprehensive know-how of the political ideals you support, & fans with Sarah Palin tickets would like nothing better than to catch America's dynamic political figure live in her Norfolk & Duluth tours in June.
