Born in 1955, Sandra Bernhard is from Flint, Michigan. She moved to Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of ten and spent her teenage years there. Enrolling into the Saguaro High School, Bernhard moved to Israel to spend some time and volunteer in kibbutz, an agricultural rural community. By the age of nineteen she decided to relocate to Los Angeles, where she started working in a high end salon as a manicurist. She started performing stand up comedic acts at the age of twenty two when she started taking on the live stage at the Comedy Store, a comedy club situated in West Hollywood, California. Her performances attracted many talent hunters and she was approached by the producers of “The Richard Pryor Show” to appear as a supporting player on the program. She took the offer and started appearing on the show in 1977. She was also seen making guest appearances in numerous other talk shows. It wasn’t until 1983 that Sandra Bernhard landed her big break. It was in this year that the talent artist was cast in Martin Scorsese’s movie, “The King of Comedy”. Bernhard portrayed the role of kidnapper and stalker named Masha. For this role, the female actor won the “Best Supporting Actress” Award presented by National Society of Film Critics Awards.
She started performing in her debut one-woman show in 1985 that was named “I’m Your Woman”. An album release came forth in the same year that presented music from the genres of pop and comedy. Tracks from the album include I’m Your Woman, Love Comes Marching Through, Everybody’s Young, Losing Yourself, Hold Me, Promise Me, Almost Torture, Boys Come Running and Near the Top. She was also seen acting in various television and film roles throughout the eighties. In 1988, Bernhard inaugurated an off-Broadway show named “Without You I’m Nothing, With You I’m Not Much Better”. The success of the show pushed the talented artist to turn it into an album and also create a film. The album presented a double CD release that consisted of a total of twenty tracks that ran for over eighty eight minutes. Bernhard was also seen making several appearances on the David Letterman Show with her close friend Madonna.
The nineties proved to be in favor of the artist as she was seen appearing in the television sitcom, Roseanne. Appearing as Nancy Bartlett, a lesbian character, Bernhard was amongst the first few actresses to portray such a controversial role openly. She was seen taking on more daring roles as she appeared in a nude pictorial in the notorious Playboy magazine in 1992. After this started a series of unstoppable television appearances in programs and movies such as The A-List, Freaky Friday, the Late Shift, the Apocalypse, Hercules, Ally McBeal, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Head Case, Will & Grace, Sopranos, Crossing Jordan, and many more. She has also released thirteen studio albums that present music from the genres of jazz, pop and blues. Singles such as “You Make Me Feel” and “On the Runway” have been charted on the thirteenth and thirty ninth places of the US Hot Dance Club Party Chart respectively.
