A rock icon in Canada and one of the most popular rock-stars of the world, Sam Roberts is not only ruling the hearts and minds of millions of his fans but also rocking music charts with his super-hit music and infectious melodies.
This popular Canadian singer-songwriter has taken the world of rock by storm with his 2002 album, and still going strong all over the place.
The life history of Sam Roberts began in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He was born to South African parents and studied at Loyola High School and McGill University. Sam had tried different things in his musical journey.
He started off as a violin player but soon moved on to guitar and other rock-friendly instruments. In 1993, he started a rock band, named William with his friends, including George Donoso. The band later changed its name to Northstar in 1996.
With this band, Sam Roberts caught the attention of some people in the independent rock circles. They got some coverage on MuchMusic and also tried their luck in Los Angeles. However, the band didn't get expected response from record labels and never got the chance to go main-stream and reach the national audience.
Finally, the band broke up in 1998 as each member went separate ways. While his friend George Donoso became The Dears and found success in indie rock circles quite early, Sam Roberts had to wait a little before coming it with a big bang.
Talking about music, Sam Roberts is a perfectionist. He was the master of his craft from day one as he has successfully proved it now. His grip on music is evident from his very first solo effort.
When Roberts returned to Canada, he began writing again and recorded Brother Down independently at home. His six-song EP, The Inhuman Condition, was released in 2001 but witnessed low sales. However, it was a pure musical gem that soon brought Sam to the forefronts of music world.
In 2002, one year after the not-so-good run of The Inhuman Condition, MapleMusic Recordings re-released the album in the summer. This time, everyone got the taste of Roberts music and he got wide appreciation from the listeners as well as from the critics.
Its first single Brother Down topped the charts and became one of the biggest hits in Canada. Don't Walk Away Eileen followed the success and further widened his fan base.
The Inhuman Condition made Sam Roberts a breakthrough hit in Canada and became one of the bestselling independent releases in Quebec and Canadian music history, selling over 50,000 copies and certified Gold in Canada.
This earned him name, fame and a record deal with Universal Music that released his second major album We Were Born in a Flame. Released in June 2003, this album further raised his stature in Canadian music scene, thanks to its singles Where Have All the Good People Gone and Hard Road.
It also got him two Juno Awards in 2004 for Album Of The Year and Rock Album Of The Year. Roberts also walked away with the Juno award for Artist Of The Year.
Sam Robertss next, Chemical City, was released on April 2006. Its first single The Gate quickly became the Numero Uno of Canadian rock radio. Bridge to Nowhere and With a Bullet also followed the suit and put Roberts on the top-spot of Canadian rock scene. He also expanded his base to USA with this album as it was released and appreciated there as well.
More recently, Sam Roberts came up with Love at the End of the World that was released in May 2008. With great single like Them Kids, it debuted at the number one position on the Canadian indie charts making Roberts a face of Canadian rock music for the whole world.
