After the formation, the band released its debut album entitled 'Yourself or Someone Like You' back in 1996. Prior to the release of the album, the band released the first single from the album titled Long Day, which received substantial air play on radio. Two of the singles from that album, Back 2 Good and Real World, went on to Billboard Hot 100. Other hit songs from the album also include 3 A.M and Push. Album, overall, received positive reviews and went on to received Diamond Status after selling well over 12 Million units in United States only. Later on, Rob Thomas flaunted his song writing talent, as he co-wrote Carlos Santana's big hit "Smooth". Not just that, Carlos Santana also let him sing the song with him, which he did, leading him to 4 Grammy Awards.

After renaming themselves as Matchbox Twenty, the band released its next studio album titled Mad Season, in 2000. The album peaked at #3 spot on the U.S Billboard 200, and bore hit singles like 'Bent', 'If You're Gone', 'Mad Season' and 'Angry'.

Band's third album, More Than You Think You Are, was released on November 12, 2002 and the album inclined more towards the hard rock genre. Although album bore several hit singles, but it wasn't able to be as successful as compared to the band's previous two albums. Only for this album, Rob Thomas joined forces with rest of the band when it came to the song writing. He also co-wrote a song titled 'Disease' with the Rolling Stones' lead vocalist, Mick Jagger. The song was an instant hit, along with other singles including Unwell, Bright Lights and All I Need. The album peaked at #6 spot on U.S Billboard 200 after it was released.

The following year, band released an EP containing six songs, which basically were acoustic and live versions of their songs. A year before going on Hiatus, the band released its live Concert DVD in 2004, which contained 20 live Songs of the band, titled 'Show: A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty'.

As the band went on hiatus, all the band members were allowed to pursue their solo side projects. Which Rob Thomas did as well as he released his first solo album titled " Something to be", on April 19, 2005. As soon as the album was released, it took the #1 spot on the album chart, making Thomas the only male solo act ever to release a solo album that took the #1 spot, from any rock or pop group. The album featured several hit singles, including 'Lonely No More', 'This is how a Heart Breaks' and 'Ever the Same'. Following his success as solo recording artist, Thomas took his act on road and started his first ever solo tour on October 5, 2005. Apart from being a solo singer, he also wrote songs for the artists like Daughtry, Pat Green, Marc Anthony, Willie Nelson, Travis Tritt and The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger.

After the reunion of the band, Thomas along with his band, Matchbox Twenty released another one of their albums, entitled Exile on Mainstream in 2007, which basically was a compilation album that also featured 6 new tracks.
