Rick Springfield is a songwriter, musician and actor. His 1981 #1 hit single, Jessie's Girl made him very famous. This hit single became a Grammy Award-winning landmark of 80s pop-rock and successfully established the emerging music video age.
Rick Springfield was born as Richard Lewis Springthorpe on August 23, 1949 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He grew up in a military family. As his father was posted to various military bases throughout Australia and Great Britain, he had to move a lot.
Springfield started playing piano when he was just 9 years old. He began playing the guitar at age 13, and writing songs at 14.
Springfield began his professional music career in 1967. His made his first appearance in a band called the Rock House as a singer/guitarist. The band changed the name to MPD, Ltd in 1968. In order to entertain the troops stationed there.On his return to Australia, Springfield formed a band named Wikety-Wak in 1969. He also joined the band Zoot later that year. Zoot became one of the most popular Australian groups of the late Sixties. Springfield began a solo career after the break up of Zoot in May 1971.He was lucky to have a #1 hit single in Australia, Speak to the Sky.
In 1972, Springfield relocated to Hollywood, California. He was signed to Capitol Records and was successful in recording his first album Beginnings. Speak to the Sky was re-released as a single in the US, and charted as #72 in the Billboard Top 100 for 1972.
His great exposure on American Bandstand, as well as being regularly featured in teen fan magazines like 16 magazine and Tiger Beat made him very much popular among the teenage girl fans.
Various issues concerning the management of his recording career and uncertainty with immigration paperwork led Springfield to start an acting career. He was starred in the cartoon series Mission: Magic, where he appears in the animated format, along with the teacher Miss Tickle and her teenaged students.
Springfield became one of the last contract actors signed to Universal Studios in 1978. He made appearances in several guest roles including The Incredible Hulk and The Rockford Files.
Beginning with a brief role as Zac in the 1978 movie Battlestar Galactica, He enjoyed his successful acting career very much. He also had a small recurring role on the soap opera The Young and The Restless. Springfield became a soap opera star on General Hospital in 1981. From 1981 through 1983, he played the role of Dr. Noah Drake while simultaneously going on tour with his band.One full length feature film Hard to Hold was made by Springfield in 1984. It could not prove to be box office hit but the movie did produce a successful soundtrack with a top ten song Love Somebody.
Springfield acted in several made-for-TV movies throughout the 1990s. He appeared in television shows such as Suddenly Susan.He starred in the suspense detective series Human Target in 1992. He also starred in another detective series, High Tide from 1994 to 1996.
Springfield also acted in musical theatre in addition to the roles on television and in film.He was a member of the original Broadway cast of the musical Smokey Joe's Caf? in 1995. The songs of rock & roll songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were featured in this Tony Award nominated musical.
Springfield performed in EFX Alive! at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada to critical acclaim from February 2001 through December 2002.

Springfield has successfully maintained a large and loyal fan base in the United States, Canada, and Japan for a long period even though his achievements are not well recognised in his homeland, Australia. Springfield's outstanding career achievements include a Grammy Award, four platinum albums, twenty US Top 100 singles and seventeen Top 40 hits including a US #1 and #2 single.
Springfield returned to music with the album Working Class Dog in 1981. The smash hit singles, Jessie's Girl, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and I've Done Everything for You were the most notable on this album.
Springfield had the honor of winning a Grammy in 1982 for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for Jessie's Girl. Springfield also nominated for a second Grammy in 1982 and a third Grammy in 1983.
