Early life
Reba McEntire was born in McAlester, Oklahoma on March 28, 1955. Clark Vincent McEntire and Jacqueline Smith were her parents. She grew up near Chockie, Oklahoma. She learnt singing and playing music. She was soon successful in forming a singing group with her brother and sisters. The group was known as The Singing McEntires. The quartet had a local hit with The Ballad of John McEntire, a tribute to their loving grandfather.
In 1974, McEntire sang The Star Spangled Banner at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City while she was a student at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. She was suggested by Rodeo attendee and country singer Red Steagall to go to Nashville to pursue a solo career.
She married Charlie Battles, a professional steer wrestler and bulldogger.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University honored Reba McEntire her as a distinguished alumna in 1986.
Career
McEntire signed a contract with Mercury Records and began her professional career with a hard honky tonk sound. Her music could not receive encouraging response because the country music was dominated by outlaw country artists like Willie Nelson and David Allan Coe at that time.
Her first charting single was Three Sheets in the Wind/I'd Really Love to See You Tonight (1978). It was followed by the bigger hit (You Lift Me) Up to Heaven (1980).
McEntire was successful in expanding her audience during the early 1980s with more pop-oriented balladry. She also signed to MCA Records in 1984. Releasing three volumes of greatest hits collections, She became one of the best-selling country artists of all time.
1982 saw the McEntire's first number one single with Can't Even Get The Blues No More. Since then, thirty-two more chartbusters were released by her. These all are recapped on Reba #1's released on November 22, 2005. Twenty-two number one Billboard singles and eleven other number one singles are featured in the two-disc compilation in chronological order, including two new tracks You're Gonna Be and Love Needs A Holiday. The compilation includes a total of thirty-five tracks.
McEntire has the honor of winning the Female Vocalist of the Year award from the Country Music Association four times in a row. She also had dozens of Top Ten hits during the 80s.
She was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City in 1995.
McEntire had the distinction of being the first recipient of a star on the Music City Walk of Fame in downtown Nashville on November 5, 2006. She was honored along side Roy Orbison, Ronnie Milsap and others.
Private life
After divorcing Charlie Battles in 1987, McEntire married again on June 3, 1989, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Narvel Blackstock, a noted steel guitarist was her husband this time. The couple took control over all aspects of her career. A son, Shelby Steven McEntire Blackstock was born to her on February 23, 1990.
Seven members of McEntire's band and her road manager were among ten people who died in a plane crash near San Diego, California on March 16, 1991. McEntire was devastated on this tragedy. She recorded the album For My Broken Heart as a tribute to them.
