Ray Stevens
Ray Stevens is an American country music and pop singer-songwriter.
What distinguishes him from others is his serious work and novelty music. His credits include two Grammy Awards: one for Everything Is Beautiful and the other for Misty.
In 1980, Ray Stevens inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Stevens broke into music industry in the mid 1950s and released two singles on Prep Records. He then signed a contract with Capitol Records.
In 1958, he joined Lowery's National Recording Corporation (NRC), with whom he arranged music, played numerous instruments, and performed background vocals.
In 1960s, Ray Stevens signed Mercury Records with whom he recorded a series of hit records. Some of these were Harry the Hairy Ape, Ahab the Arab, Funny Man, Santa Claus is Watching You, and others.
Stevens is also noted for employing canned laugh tracks in his comedic novelty songs. Harry the Hairy Ape, The Streak, and It's Me Again, Margaret are a few examples. These songs contributed to his success in the 60s and 70s. In 1968, Stevens was signed to Monument Records who released his serious material.
Ray Stevens did a top 30 pop hit Mr. Businessman, Have A Little Talk With Myself, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Sunday Morning Coming Down and a few other popular songs with Monument Records.
However, he also continued releasing novelty songs at the same time. Gitarzan turned out to be a million-selling Top 10 pop hit. Around this time, he began making appearances on TV shows like The Andy Williams Show and subsequently hosted his own summer show in 1970.
The era of 70s saw Ray Stevens becoming a well-known studio musician and producer. His gospel-inflected single Everything Is Beautiful earned him a Grammy Award in 1970.
In 1975, Ray Stevens came up with an album called Misty, becoming his biggest country hit. The album garnered him his second Grammy Award. In 1980, Ray joined RCA who released such singles as Shriner's Convention, Night Games, One More Last Chance, Written Down in My Heart, and My Dad just to name a few.
Ray then joined MCA in 1984 as a country comedy act. MCA released his albums which proved to be hugely successful, hitting sales of over half a million.
Ray Stevens was also named as Comedian of the Year for 9 consecutive years from 1986 to 1994 by the fan-voted Music City News awards. Stevens last chart record came in 2002 with Osama Yo' Mama. It became his first gold record since The Streak in 1974.
His songs have been showcased in several videos, while his videos were frequently offered via television commercials. Comedy Video Classics issued in 1992, Ray Stevens Live! and More Ray Stevens Live!! were released in 1993, while Get Serious!! came out in 1995.
