What distinguishes him from others is his serious work and novelty music. His credits include two Grammy Awards: one for Everything Is Beautiful and the other for Misty.

Stevens is also noted for employing canned laugh tracks in his comedic novelty songs. Harry the Hairy Ape, The Streak, and It's Me Again, Margaret are a few examples. These songs contributed to his success in the 60s and 70s. In 1968, Stevens was signed to Monument Records who released his serious material.

In 1980, Ray joined RCA who released such singles as Shriner's Convention, Night Games, One More Last Chance, Written Down in My Heart, and My Dad just to name a few.
Ray then joined MCA in 1984 as a country comedy act. MCA released his albums which proved to be hugely successful, hitting sales of over half a million.
