Grammy Award nominee Vijay Iyer is famously known as a performer and composer of jazz music. Throughout his career, Vijay has experimented with several genres to find the right mix. On this journey, he has worked in collaboration with electronic sound sculptors, hip-hop artists and Indian musicians. He also simultaneously led his own bands, the “Vijay Iyer Trio,”“Spirit Complex” and the “Poisonous Prophets.” Vijay was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2010 in the the categories, “Individual Or Group for Historicity”and “Best Jazz Instrumental Album.”
Vijay has also produced Mutations, a ten part suite string quartet. The official recording debuted in 2005 featuring thirteen original recordings by Vijay on piano. Most of these multi-layered contemporary chamber compositions were deeply inspired by György Ligeti, a classical composer. The graceful melody presented in the composition brings out a wide gamut of emotions.
Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi is a movie by Prashant Bhargava featuring music by Vijay Iyer. It is based on the joyful celebration of springtime in India. The concept of Holi bears an intriguing connection with the renowned ballet and orchestral concert,Rite of Spring(French: Le Sacre du printemps). It represents the compositions by Igor Stravinsky, the Russian composer. The festival of Holi provides a platform and an occasion where the characteristics of ritual and transformation can be reconsidered as depicted in Le Sacré du Printemps.
During the Holi festivities, the phrase Radhe Radhe is heard a lot. This phrase is used during the festival to greet, to praise God, to scream in delight, to pay respect and more. Loosely following the concept of “Le Sacré du Printemps,”Radhe Radhe also features ballet of different kinds. Radhe Radhe will be performed with the international contemporary ensemble Mutations by Vijay Iyer. The line-up comprises of Vijay Iyer (piano, electronics), Kivie Cahn-Lipmann (cello), Kyle Armbrust (viola), Miranda Cuckson & Michi Wiancko (violins).
