Richard Hunt, Douglas Schmidt, Rene Gosselin and Charles-?tienne Marchand, all they four are combinaly known as Quartango.
Among these one is related to a piano and arrangements, other is a bandoneon, another is a double bass and the last one is related to a violin. Together, they offer up a varied repertoire ranging from the best-loved classic tangos to tango nuevo and Piazzolla.
Quartango has charmed audiences across Canada and the United States, and in Tokyo, Taipei, Paris and S?o Paulo. They stole the show at Carnegie Hall, in performance with the New York Pops.
They have also appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Orchestre metropolitain. This past summer, Quartango performed four outdoor concerts with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, attracting a total of more than 60,000 spectators.
The result is nothing short of delightful; when four classically trained musicians explore their passion for tango. The chemistry between the musicians and their engaging rapport with the audience create a memorable experience that always brings down the house.
Quartango takes tango in new directions, with impeccable arrangements, unexpected allusions to classical music and a dose of humour, woven together by the elegant interplay of ensemble playing at its best.
In 1996, Quartango stole the show at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. They received enthusiastic accolades for their performances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. Quartango has charmed audiences across Canada and in Tokyo, Taipei, Paris and New York. They also explore other genres, from jazz and opera to waltzes and jigs, in their own inimitable style.
In November 1998, The groups appearances with the Orchestre symphonique de Quebec and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in January 1999, were a hit with critics and audiences alike.
Their CD Espresso was honoured with the Felix Award in the world music category. Compadres was nominated in the same category in 1998. Esprit; their most recent recording, was a finalist in the 2001 Juno Awards and is nominated for a Felix 2001.
The group has also toured in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Quartango breathes new life into a genre that has a tendency to become mired in nostalgia or bridled by a rigid purism.
The four members are equally at home in an intimate chamber music setting, with a symphony orchestra or at a jazz festival. Quartangos musicians combine their musical flights of fancy with the talents of classical singers to enrich their already varied repertoire.
From Bizet to Piazzolla, Quartango revisits well-known tango songs and beloved arias and gives them its own special trademark.
