Possessed
Possessed is a name of one of the most influential American death metal band, which was incepted in the year of 1983 in the city of San Francisco. They are greatly known for their fast playing style and Becerra's guttural vocals.
They have produced a great influence on the overall death metal genre of the music world, and due to it they are generally referred to as the godfathers of the death metal genre and are often considered the first death metal group. It may also be a reference to their first demo entitled Death Metal.
The band had a break up in the year of 1987, but later reformed in the year of 1993. The original members had finally returned to the band in the year of 2007, under the supervision of original bassist/vocalist Jeff Becerra.
After the formation of the band, it had recruited Jeff Becerra to take the seat of the lead vocalist, after the death of original lead vocalist, Barry Fisk.
The band had worked hard to practice and to play at the local venues, for experience and exposure. It happened in the very early days of their live performances, that they came to meet fellow bay-area heavy metal band, Exodus.
Exodus had really helped them to bring forth, the four song demo recording to the attention of Brian Slagel, who was the head of Metal Blade Records. Slagel had shown great interest in the band, and he gave an opportunity to put one of their songs on an upcoming compilation titled Metal Massacre 6.
Possessed had given a track with a title Swing of the Axe. Quite intestinally, guitarist Brian Montana had left the band due to creative differences, right after the release of the compilation, He was replaced by Larry Lalonde.
Although Metal Blade did not offer to sign the band, the compilation drew the attention of Combat Records. Possessed had signed with the label and released their album titled Seven Churches in 1985.
Possessed is often been considered to be the first death metal band. It all happened mainly due to the fact of Jeff Becerra's grunted vocals.
The band had been under a heavy influence of Show No Mercy-era Slayer, but still it had formed a vocal style that really set them apart, and set the stage for death metal's breakaway from thrash metal.
The band's songs are more focused on Satanism, and the lyrics have a touch of ignition to those. It is also true that the style of Possessed's first album, Seven Churches, was highly praised for the speed and the brutality of the vocals. But it is also a reality that their follow up album entitled Beyond the Gates, had greatly disappointed both fans and critics alike.
The album was released on the Halloween of the year of 1986, but the album did not prove to be as powerful and as influential as its predecessor, and the band's popularity suffered because of it.
Because of Possessed's earlier material being more popular than their later work, they are most often remembered for their first album, Seven Churches.
In 2007, it was announced that Jeff Becerra would be performing under the Possessed name at the Wacken Open Air festival and he would be backed by all members of 'Sadistic Intent', one of the bands featured on the Possessed tribute, and would also headline the Gathering of the Bestial Legions III festival in Los Angeles.
