Polysics
May be many of you have never heard of the wave/synth pop/punk/rock band, Polysics. But chances are good youve heard of their hometown of Tokyo, Japan. Polysics name originates from the Korg Polysix and the band was formed out of the bands frontman Hayashis respect and love for Devo.
With the roots of new-wave and the attitude of punk-rock, the Polysics please their fans with the most energetic live shows they can imagine. Those who listen to Polysics, they dont have to listen hard to realize where their inspiration is coming from. Since 1999, Polysics have released several albums which have earned them a huge fan-base.
A violently energetic amalgam of fractured punk rock and vintage video game sound effects, the Tokyo-based pop punk rock band, Polysics, gained recognition quickly due to their spastic live shows and trademark uniforms. Onstage, the group members appear while wearing the wildest costumes from outer space.
Polysics use multiple languages including English, Japanese. Today, they are known as the Japanese equivalent of Devo. The band was formed in 1997 by frontman/guitarist who wanted to expand on the cartoonish image and musical ideas of the zany art-punk icons he had seen on TV.Polysics got their big break in 1998 at a concert in Tokyo.
Polysics line-up enlisted Junichi Sugai on drums, Sako on vocals & bass. In 1998, Kayo also joined the band whose stoic, mechanical stage presence combined with the other members frenetic live antics turned the whole scene into a strangely lopsided but exciting stage dynamic.
Together they created high energy music combined with synthesized and computer generated sound to create a unique mixture of punk and electro-pop. The groups insane live performances soon caught the attention of the local indie record label Deckrec and UK label Project. The labels soon released Polysics 1st P. Soon after the released of the record, Poly 2 left the band.
Polysics remaining members made a plan to embark on a national tour. They performed their first live concert in the US at the SXSW 2000 festival in Austin/Texas. Hayashi finally had a chance to meet his inspiration, Mutato Muzika of Devo. That same year, Asianman Records issued the groups U.S. debut, Hey! Bob! My Friend!.
The album was a compilation of songs from their two Japanese albums. They recruited bassist Fumi and the new lineup recorded and released Eno that July. With a new member, Polysics continued to develop their electro-pop style.
With the release of two albums and one EP in 2002, Polysics began generating a buzz. The following year, Sugai departed and was temporarily replaced by Ishimaru. 2003 proved to be a grand year for the band as they started receiving worldwide recognition.
Their 4th album National P went on sale and the Polysics Tour 2003-2004-National Pioneer- began in December. The tour was recorded and released afterwards as the PippikippippiP in USA!! Dvd in the Japan and the US.
In 2004, Polysics came up with a greatest-hits album, entitled Polysics or Die!!!!. The album was released on Tofu Records and was followed by their most accessible studio album, Now Is the Time! next year.
The album Now Is The Time took things to a whole new level for Polysics. Yano replaced Sugai on the drum stool and the band hit the road for their longest tour yet, including many high profile support slots. The tour included 96 shows in six countries, in support of the Chiefs.
Fueled by an unstoppable work ethic, Polysics came back to studio in 2007 and began recording the Japan-only release Karate House on Ki/oon. The group also put out a series of videos for the singles Electric Surfin Go Go, You-You-You, and Catch on Everywhere.
With highlights including a sold out show in front of 2000 fans in Paris, the Polysics World Tour Or Die 2007 did exactly as its name suggests. Their performance at the Wireless festival in Leeds and London, the label boss witnessed their set at US show, a record contract with MySpace Records for the US.
After signing a territorial license deal to MySpace Records, the up-and-coming U.S. label re-launched Polysics or Die! in the States. The version also included some of the latest singles from Karate House and a bonus DVD of videos and live cuts.
The comprehensive Polysics or Die! appeared on October 9, 2007, marking Polysics tenth anniversary. On the Gan-Shin sublabel Okami Records, Polysics released their brand new album called We Ate the Machine All Over Europe this year.
Polysics have been noted for their extremely energetic live performances and their wild gimmicky outfits. Their music contains lyrics in Japanese, broken English, or sometimes plain gibberish.
Their singing has undoubtedly earned them a satisfied audience. Polysics are indeed precious gems of rock/punk and pop music. Listen to the potential music of Polysics that will surely run you over and make you rock.
