The Pelican members love to call them secretive instrumental art metal outfit. Yes, the band is not your regular in-your-face kind of rock bands with loud sounds and even louder lyrics. The band hails from Chicago, Illinois and consists of quartet of extremely talented musicians. With Trevor de Brauw on guitars, Bryan Herweg on bass guitar, his brother Larry Herweg on drums and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec again on guitars; the band blends the talent of these awesome foursome who creates some of the most distinguished melodies together as Pelican.
Pelican is a new-age band with new sound and approach. Formed in Chicago, the band is currently signed by Isis mastermind Aaron Turner's Hydra Head Records. Their first self-titled EP was released in 2001 followed by a full length debut Australasia.
Released in 2003, the album saw phenomenal success and went on to become a touchstone for a growing subset of instrumental rock bands. Pelican got the right kind of exposure and acclaim from their very first outing because they have something new and different to satisfy rock music listeners. While the fans loved their album, the critics also termed them as the next big thing in instrumental rock.
Although, in the hustle and bustle of current music scenario, many bands and singers do not manage to continue strong after taking a good start, but Pelican proved that they are not those kind as their second album got more appreciation than the first one.
Having released March into the Sea and full-length LP The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw in 2005, the band has proved that they are not one-hit wonders. Their second outing was far more better and refined than the first one and it earned them acclaim from the fans and the critics alike.
The band went out for a long successful tour after this album where they gave their played their best gigs for the rock music lovers in different parts of the country. However, even this was not enough for them as they worked really hard for their next album and created the music that is even more rocking than the previous two.
City of Echoes is the name of third album by this powerhouse of talent we know as Pelican. Released in 2007, the album is regarded the best not only amongst Pelican work, but also among instrumental productions of recent times.
While the reviewers first termed their sound as an experiment in crushing heaviness, then praised them for composing overtly uplifting melodies, their reaction to the third album was more welcoming than ever before. Even audiences responded the same as City of Echoes exemplifies maturation of the band that has always played music of their own.
The stunning album found their sound growing even more dense and collaborative and they explored new dimensions within their field of expertise through this masterpiece musical album.
Although it has not been long since Pelican has emerged on the rock music horizon, they have surely made a place for themselves only through their impeccable music sense. Apart from their studio albums, the band has a couple of live concert compilations in its kitty as well.
These include the 2005 released Live in Chicago that contains the recording of their splendid act on 11 June 2003 and a DVD of live performance in London released as After the Ceiling Cracked in 2008.
