In 1957, he auditioned for Don Costa at ABC, and sang a lovestruck verse his former babysitter. It was the song, "Diana", which brought Anka instant recognition. It went to number one on the charts. Historically, "Diana" is one of the top selling 45s. Anka followed Diana with 4 songs that were Top 20 hits in 1958. At 17, he emerged as one of the world's biggest teen idols. Anka toured Britain, and went to Australia with Buddy Holly.

Anka's talent exceeded his singing, as he also wrote Buddy Holly's major hit, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore." It was re-created 1962 from a song Anka had written earlier, "Toot Sweet." He also wrote Tom Jones' major hit record, "She's A Lady". Paul Anka acted in the 1960s, and also wrote songs for motion pictures. One of these was the hit movie ‘The Longest Day'. He also wrote and recorded the hit, "Lonely Boy". Paul Anka performed at the Las Vegas casinos. He returned to Canada man times every year, performing before sold out crowds at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

More than ten years after a hit record, Anka joined Odia Coates to produce the number 1 hit, "Having My Baby" [1974]. Aside from this, they recorded two more duets that both reached into the Top 10. Recognition:
Paul Anka was chosen for the Canadian Music Hall of Fame [1980]. He also has a star at the 6840 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Government of France has also honored him with the title "Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters" [1991]. In October of 1995, he appeared in Treehouse of Horror VI on The Simpsons.
