Bron in 1957 in Plant City Florida and raised in Nashville, Pam Tillis inherited the love of music from his father and country music legend Mel Tillis. She performed the song Tom Dooley on the Grand Ole Opry when she was just eight. By the age of 12, she learnt to play piano and guitar. While she was at the University of Tennessee, she performed with two bands. One was a jug band called High Country Swing Band and the other was folk duo in which she collaborated with Ashley Cleveland. She moved to California in 1978 and founded a band called Freelight, an adventurous style band based on jazz and rock. She returned to Nashville in 1979 and performed her songs in Bluebird Café, eventually signing to Warner Bros.
Tillis released her debut single in 1981 titled Every Home Should Have One. Her debut album Above and Beyond the Doll of Cutey was released in 1983. After releasing several more singles, Tillis left the label and became a Tree Publishing’s staff songwriter shifting her focus to contemporary country.
In 1987, she signed a contract with Arista Nashville. Her first single Don’t Tell Me What to Do peaked at number 5 on country charts. Her first album Put Yourself in My Place featured several songs that charted among top 10. This gave Tillis the long-awaited breakthrough. RIAA certified the album as gold and Tillis was praised widely for her commanding voice and smart country material. Her 1992’s album Homeward Looking Angel turned out to be an equally successful follow-up featuring Let that Pony Run and Shake the Sugar Tree which charted among top 5. This album was also certified gold and it peaked at number 10 on top country charts and number 69 on Billboard 200. Her fourth album Sweetheart’s Dance peaked at number 6 on Top Country Albums and became her most successful album to this date earning her critical acclaim and huge fan following. Certified Platinum, the album featured her only number one single in the country charts, Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life). She released All of This Love in 1995. It was certified gold with lead-off single I Said a Prayer reaching number 12.
Tillis signed to Sony Music Entertainment in 2002 releasing It’s All Relative: Tillis Sings Tillis which was a collection of her father’s material. She launched her own Record label named as Stellar Cat Records in 2007 and released two albums, RhineStoned and Just in Time for Christmas. With total control over creativity, she let her heart out in these albums performing with full honesty and emotions. With the rollicking reverence of the song Band in the Window, the affection radiating from Life Sure has Changed Us Around, the humor of Crazy By Myself and the insight of Bettin’ Money on Love the album creates an aura of freedom that is hard to miss.
In 2000, Tillis became a member of Grand Ole Opry. She also holds an acting career on Television and Stage. She appeared as herself on ABC’s hit series Nashville in 2013. She has won several accolades and is recognized widely for her talents. She won her first major award, Country Music Association’s Vocal Event of the Year in 1993. She was also named CMA’s top female Vocalist in 1994.
