In their 15 years of playing together as a music band, the culture-mashers Ozomatli have become cultural ambassadors for the US State Department. The band also released a limited edition EP called “Coming Up” in collaboration with the drummer Mario Calire. Soon after the release of EP, the members decided to take a new direction in their style by embracing Arab and North African music in addition to their own style.
In 2007, the group’s popularity reached international heights and their fan following increased further. The band has embarked on a world tour to entertain their global fans in countries like Japan, Australia and North Africa. The music of Ozomatli blends and transforms traditions from Latin America, Africa, Middle East and Asia, which makes their music global in its reach. In counties like India, Tunisia, Nepal and Jordan, Ozomatli didn’t only play free public music concerts, but also offered to teach classes and musical workshops, went to arts centers, arranged summer camps and a lot of other charity stuff. Ozomatli toured to Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam in 2009, performed free concerts and extended humanitarian outreach such as AIDS and HIV care clinics, schools for deaf and blind and orphanage, among others.
