Ottawa Bluesfest as clear from the name is an outdoor music festival that mainly focuses on blues music and is held in the lush green city of Ottawa every year in the month of July. This city is the capitol of Canada in the Ontario province, Ottawa River flows right through it. The town was initially established by the name of Bytown in 1826 and eventually it was renamed Ottawa in 1855. The city is spread over an area of about 1000 sq miles. Currently it is the fourth most populous city in the country with a population of over 1 million. There are four Martello towers and an ancient structure called Fort Henry that are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some other popular buildings in the city are National Gallery of Canada, Peace Tower, Downtown Ottawa towers and Fairmont Chateau Laurier.
Ottawa Bluesfest kicked off in 1994 and Clarence Clemons was the first artist who performed live on stage. Clemons was one of the most seasoned rock and R&B tenor saxophone players in the world. Since Clemons performance the Bluesfest has grown into a huge musical extravaganza. The event from the very first year is being organized and handled by famous art director and executive Mark Monahan. Over the years owing to the expansion of the festival a dedicated team of full time employees has been hired that includes Mike Rouleau as director operations, AJ Sauve as communications director and Nathalie Laperriere as sponsorship director.
Initially Ottawa Bluesfest was a one stage event but once the attendance started to increase, the organizers erected two then three and eventually ended up with five stages. Two of the stages were allocated to main headlining bands. In the year 2007 over 300,000 music lovers attended this festival. With the passage of time it has become one of the most diverse music lineup festivals in the country. Some of the artists that have performed in this festival include blues guitarist Robert Cray, legendary Chicago blues guitarist Buddy Guy, American rock singer and pianist John Hiatt, seasoned rock n roll and jazz singer Dr. John, southern rock blues rock band from California Little Feat and acclaimed rock band Cheap Tricks.
This year there will be four stages' erected and they will be named Bell Stage, Claridge Homes, River and Black Sheep Stage. The artist lineup this year is a huge one and includes big names like American power pop group Jimmy Eat World, Australian indie rock group The Cat Empire, populr blues hard rock band Grand Funk Railroad, Nigerian Afrobeat saxophone player Femi Kuti, garage rock group from Ohio The Black Keys, popular Canadian musician Bahamas, River City Junction, The Split, Canadian roots and American singer Brock Zeman and popular Canadian dubstep duo from Montreal by the name of Adventure Club.
Ottawa Bluesfest started off mainly as a blues music festival. Over the years the organizers have introduced artists from other genres like pop and rock. This is one of the main reasons why it has become one of the most popular musical gatherings in the country. If you want to watch some fine musical bands and singers live on stage then you should quickly grab Ottawa Bluesfest tickets and be there.
