Born in 1981, American classical pianist Orion Weiss was somewhat a child prodigy. He began his musical studies at Preucil School of Music in Iowa City. Growing up, he took piano lessons from Carol Lubetkin and Edith Reed. From 1991 to 1995, he attended Interlochen Arts Camp and won concerto competition every year.
Weiss made his Cleveland Orchestra debut performance in 1999 with Liszt's Piano Concerto no. 1. His following performances include Shostakovich's Piano Concerto no. 2 with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in March 1999 and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto in October 1999. Over the years, Weiss has performed with several orchestras including Chicago Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra.
As a chamber musician and a recitalist, Weiss has appeared all across the United States at venues and festivals from Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts to Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall and Seattle Chamber Music Society. In 2005, he made his European debut at the Musée du Louvre in Paris and then toured with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He toured USA with the Orchester der Klangverwaltung Munich in 2007. He toured China in May 2009 with Pittsburgh Symphony. In spring 2008, Orion Weiss released his debut recording for Yarlung records. His recital disc includes works of Mozart, J.S. Bach, Scriabin and Carter.
The 2012-13 season brought Weiss in multiple engagements with New World Symphony and Baltimore Symphony, Hong Kong Chamber Music Festival, Richmond Symphony and Tucson Symphony. In spring of 2012, Weiss released a recital album of Dvorak, Prokofiev and Bartok. He also worked on recordings of complete Gershwin with JoAnn Falletta and Buffalo Philharmonic. Weiss has also performed duo-piano recitals with many pianists including Emanuel Ax. He made his debut in 2012 at Kennedy center and joined the Pacifica Quartet at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico same year.
Weiss was featured in Musical America and Symphony Magazine in 2004 as one of great artists of next generation in classical music. Throughout his career, he has been receiving awards and recognition everywhere. He was awarded with Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999. He won Mieczyslaw Munz Award at the Juilliard School in 2001 and Gina Bachauer Scholarship in 2002 and 2003. He also got Julliard William Petschek Award in 2005. He was also honored as Classical Recording Foundation's Young Artist of the Year in 2010. Weiss was a member of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 2002 to 2004 during which he appeared at Alice Tully Hall performing Ravel's La Valse with pianist Shai Wosner in 2002-2003 season.
