Active since the late 1950s, the artist gained a lot of fame after the release of his debut album, "Gris-Gris". Although his very first album, it managed to score the 143rd spot on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time". Dr. John established his footing in the entertainment industry even more in the 1970s when he participated in a theatrical stage show influenced by medicine shows, voodoo ceremonies as well as Mardi Gras costumes.
Dr. John's second best known album was, "Dr. John's Gumbo". Containing only cover numbers of some of the best New Orleans' R&B artists and one original song, this album was the artist's way of paying tribute to the music he had grown up listening to. The lead single from this album, Iko Iko became a smash hit and marked his entry into the "Billboard top 40 singles chart".
And that is not it; the album was even ranked on number 402 by Rolling Stone in the list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time". His other famous albums include, "Sippiana Hericane", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Television", "Duke Elegant", "Tango Palace", "City Lights", "Goin' Back to New Orleans" and the most recently released, "Locked Down". Till date, his most well-known single remains the funk-flavored and catchy ballad, Right Place Wrong Time.
