Tiempo Libre was formed in 2001, when seven of its members gave up their solo careers and decided to become a part of the first ever all-Cuban original Timba band. On its first public show at the Ravinia Festival in 2002, the band shared the beauty of traditional Cuban music with the twist of modern pop and jazz. They created a new style of music with its extraordinary members, all trained at the best known conservatories in Cuba. With more than a decade in mainstream music, the band has collaborated with world class artist. Instrumentalist like Joshua Bell and Sir James Galway and classical composer like Ricardo Lorenz have all worked with them on their albums. With these collaborations the band has connected classical and jazz music. Cuban music has been recreated without boundaries by Libre. No wonder they have produced some of the most original and enjoyable Latin American jazz, everyone loves, Timba!
Tiempo Libre came to mainstream music when it released its debut album Arroz con Mango . The album was a tribute to the member’s link to their homeland and streets of Havana. It was always a dream of these and members to come and live in the U.S to sing and play music without boundaries. Once in the US, this album became a celebration of their new start. The album made the band an international star in no time. Getting great public and critical acclaim world over the album finally got a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Salsa/Meringue Album. Form here onwards the band made more of their magical music and released Lo Que Esperabas. The album was nominated in the category of Best Latin Tropical album for the Grammys. The band was also given the title of Best Latin Band for the year 2008.
Bach in Havana, was the band’s third studio effort released in 2009. It too got nominated for a Grammy as the Best Tropical Latin Album. Singles Yosvany Terry and Paquito D’Rivera were beautiful fusions of Afro-Cuban rhythms and classy Bach that made this album memorable. In 2011 the band released My Secret Radio; a tribute to the band members early days hiding and listening to Miami radio stations in Cuba. This was the time that the band absorbed the Afro-Cuban tradition and influences from the pop world. The band plays a wide range of impressions like Chaka Kahn, Earth Wind & Fire and Michael Jackson.
