Newport Massey Hall is a sensational music event, celebrating over half a century of American jazz music by combining two iconic jazz events in one night. Newport Massey Hall is an event dubbed as the ‘grandfather of all jazz festivals’. It features America’s top jazz musicians under one roof, in one night, performing some of most innovative music and paying homage to the rich heritage that is jazz. A superb celebration of jazz, the event also pays tribute to what is one of the greatest jazz concerts ever staged, held since 1953. This concert, organized at Toronto’s Massey Hall has featured Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie on one stage. The sixtieth anniversary of this Massey Hall concert is set to be celebrated at this particular event.
Added to the iconic Massey Hall concert, the Newport Jazz Festival’s sixtieth anniversary is also being celebrated with a lineup of artists that includes the best jazz musicians in the US; Anat Cohen, Karrin Allyson, Randy Brecker and Mark Whitfield. Together, they will breathe life into this amazing celebration of jazz. The sixtieth anniversary of the Jazz at Massey Hall concert will feature the Bill Charlap Trio, Jon Faddis and Phil Woods. In short, Newport Massey Hall will play host to seven of the most astounding jazz acts in the US and the world today.
The Newport Jazz Festival was first organized in 1954, by Elaine Lorillard and George Wein. It has been held since then each year in Newport within the American state of Rhode Island. The event was founded by Elaine Lorillard, who also funded the festival with Louis Lorillard, her husband. The duo brought George Wein, renowned American jazz impresario, to organize what has since gone on to become one of the greatest jazz festivals in the US. Soon after starting, the festival was broadcasted all over the US by Voice of America, with recordings released by a number of record labels.
In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival moved to New York City but returned in 1981 to Newport while also being held in New York City. In 1984, it was renamed the JVC Jazz Festival after the sponsor JVC. In Newport, it is often organized at the Fort Adams State Park and as the Newport Folk Festival during the same month, yet another event that celebrates American folk music. Dubbed the First American Jazz Festival, it has been held since then and is unique in that it also contains academic panels in addition to breathtaking live concerts.
Since then, the festival has played host to many jazz musicians and bands and even rock bands, including Miles Davis, Jeff Beck, Ten Years After, John Mayall, Jethro Tull, James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Led Zeppelin, B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band and Dionne Warwick. Similarly, Jazz at Massey Hall is a famous live concert that was staged at Toronto’s Massey Hall and featured some of the foremost jazz musicians of the time who played and recorded music together as a group for the first time.
The musicians Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Max Roach and Charles Mingus played a concert that is today an inductee of the Grammy Hall of Fame and among the Basic Jazz Library of National Public Radio. It has even been dubbed the Greatest Jazz Concert Ever.
