This transformed the Orchestra's organization from a musician-operated cooperative that it once used to be, to a corporate management structure.
The Guarantors brought Gustav Mahler to the Philharmonic as the main conductor. They also increased the number of concerts from 18 to 54 in this season. This also included a tour to England.
During the war years, German conductor, Wilhelm Furtwangler, the English conductor could not be hired. They had to settle for Artur Rodzinski, John Barbirolli and Pole, as joint replacements for Toscanini. A year later, Barbirolli won full conductorship. By 1943, Rodzinski was appointed Musical Director.
Bernstein was in charge of the beginning of the Orchestra's largest commissioning project, creating 109 new pieces for orchestra. September 1962 was the time when the Philharmonic commissioned Aaron Copland to write Connotations for Orchestra. This was to be performed at the opening concert of the new Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. When the Orchestra moved to Lincoln Center, it stretched its concerts into the spring and summer.
