New Edition

New Edition is a band that was formed in 1978 in Boston. The band received most of its popularity through the 80s when the boy bands were in trend; the fellow boy bands included 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men. Original line up of New Edition included RalphTresvant, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins and Ricky Bells. Their earliest hit was their song ‘Candy Girl’ that was released in 1983 and was followed by the album with the same name. New Edition released its self titled second album in 1984. The album included songs Mr. Telephone Man and Cool It Now which peaked at charts at number twenty and number three respectively. The band’s member Brown left the scene to start a solo career in 1985. For some time, the group continued with four band members. Soon the lead singer Johnny Gill joined them, after which they released the album in 1988 by the name “Heart Break”. Even though the album received critical acclaim, more members decided to pursue a solo career, getting inspired by Brown who had made it into the limelight alone.

New Edition went on hiatus to follow other projects. After about a decade of absence, the band members promised their fans a return to the scene. Meanwhile, they had achieved personal successes in whatever projects they took as solo singers and musicians. Hence, in 1996, New Edition regrouped to create “Home Again” album. Home Again debuted peaking at Billboard 200 and Album Charts of R&B, soon becoming the most successful album by the band till date. The album included many hit songs that peaked charts. Two of them being I’m Still In Love With You and Hit Me Off.

New Edition decided to go on Home Again Tour right after the success of the album. However, the tour didn’t turn out the way it was perceived. Old disputes somehow found their way back into the minds of the members and this time the breakup was even more intense than before. The world witnessed the longest hiatus of the band. New Edition has had many reunions since then. In 2005, the band performed at BET’s 25th Anniversary Special. The concert included their old hits. In 2009, Gill confirmed that the band is signing to Irving Azoff for a brand new beginning.

For once, all the six original members of the bands reunited to perform at Essence Music Festival in 2011, this performance marked their 30^th anniversary as well. This performance was also a prelude to their new tour, which was supposed to start in 2011. This is going to be the return that their fans have anticipated for a long, long time.
