Natalie Merchant, who grew up listening to bands and musicians like Styx, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin, has herself managed to become one of the most respected rock/pop artists of today. Back in the 70s, music was very much encouraged at her home; in fact, her grandfather was also a multi-instrumentalist. At first young Natalie had second thoughts but by the early 80s, she was certain about what she was going to do with her life. In 1981, she became the lead vocalist of the band, 10,000 Maniacs. Together, they released seven studio albums and performed live at various popular venues. Natalie left the band in the early 90s and finally went on to make a name for herself as a solo artist.
Besides singing, she has also garnered perfection in playing the piano and keyboard. Folk, pop and alternative rock are some of the genres she specializes in. To date, Natalie Merchant has worked with a number of well-known record label companies including Nonesuch, Myth America and Elektra Records. The gifted musician is also known for providing soundtracks for many films including One Fine Day, Purgatory House, Cheaper by the Dozen, Bringing Out the Dead and Candida.
Her debut album, Tigerlily hit the shelves in 1995 receiving a 5x Platinum certification by the RIAA and selling millions of records worldwide. Songs including, “Carnival,” “Jealousy” and “Wonder” are some of her early hits as a solo artist. To earn a prominent spot at the US Billboard 200 is a big deal for any musician and Natalie Merchant achieved that with her very first record. Merchant’s confessional writing style was praised by many critics, keeping their hopes high for the next one. A few years later, Natalie released her second album, Ophelia. Critics from the Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and Allmusic loved her musical arrangements in this one. No wonder, the record received a Platinum certification along with the 8th position on the US Billboard 200.

Numerous internet publications and magazines such as Uncut, Q, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Allmusic and Entertainment Weekly wrote favorable reviews. The most recent album of hers is Leave Your Sleep, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard Top Folk Album chart.
