The history of Nashville Symphony: Nashville Swings dates back to 1945 when its founding member Walter Sharp proposed the idea of establishing a symphony orchestra. The next year William Strickland was chosen as the first Music Director. Later in 1951 when he left, Guy Taylor took over and continued to work for the betterment and growth of the orchestra. In the next years the orchestra saw many music directors working to the utmost in order to flourish the Nashville Symphony. Willis Page, Thor Johnson, Michael Charry, Kenneth Schermerhorn, Leonard Slatkin being among them.
The present music director Giancarlo Guerrero took the responsibility in his hands in the year 2009 and continues to work for the honor and prestige of the orchestra. As far as the initial popularity goes Kenneth Schermerhorn has a lot to do with it. It was under his dynamic leadership that the orchestra's strong foundation was laid, later establishing it as an institution. During that time Nashville Symphony performed at Carnegie Hall garnering an ecstatic response. In addition to that, the year 2000's East Coast Tour turned out to be another headliner.
