Consisting of Richard Moody and Amir Amiri, Moody Amiri is part of The Tehran Project that has already taken the international music scene by storm. With its distinctive sound produced by the fusion of traditional Persian music elements with classical, jazz and Indian styles, Moody Amiri has made some ground-breaking contributions to the music scene. It has gained critical reception and recognition that has opened doors of limitless possibilities for the duo. When it comes to the duo's eclectic work, all the geographical boundaries of music disappear and what's left is the spellbinding sound that fits somewhere in between chamber music and classical/spiritual music.
Inspired by the fluidity and diversity of their respective genres of music, Moody and Amiri met and formed Moody Amiri in 2011 in an effort to expand the boundaries of their musical backgrounds. Richard Moody is a Canadian violinist and composer who is sometimes referred to as the underground legend that has took a plunge in almost every style that is there for a string player. Moody's main interests lie in improvisation and combining different musical techniques and styles he learned during his extensive travels. With his many successful musical endeavors, he is a well-known name in Winnipeg, his native place.
Starting off his musical career as a part of Swing Dynamique, a gypsy jazz group he joined during his teens, Moody later got education in classical music from University of Manitoba. He was the co-founder of Acoustically Inclined, a much-admired folk/rock group which earned him a huge national as well as international following. Called as a local musical treasure, Moody has performed and recorded with a number of artists including his sister Ruth Moody, Joel Fafard, Jane Siberry and Woody Holler. He also performs as a solo artist and is currently a member of The Bills, a Juno nominated band.
Amir Amiri, the other member of Moody Amiri is an Iranian-Canadian santur virtuoso and a revolutionary when it comes to Persian music. Well taught in Iranian and Indian classical music, Amiri is currently a resident of Montreal. Previously, he has worked with distinguished musicians like Edgar Meyer and Bob Becker as well as jazz greats like Mike Murley, John Stetch, Hugh Fraser and Dracy Phillip. He has also worked as a composer, musical director, percussionist and consultant for various Canadian theatre and dance companies. He has also recorded for numerous French TV documentaries and feature films. He is the recipient of CBC Galaxie Rising Stars' Artist of the Year and Betty Mitchell Award.
Joining hands in 2011, Moody and Amiri created an ear-pleasing blend of styles and culture that caught attention of the music fraternity quickly. In their music, there's beauty and musical virtuosity drawn from many different origins, making it a unique musical experience for listeners. The duo is currently working on its debut "Safar" which will be released in early 2014.
